    V.1803 & File History..

I was under the impression that the File History function would be deleted when v.1803 was implemented. File History hadn't been working for many months under v.1709. After installation, I saw that File History was still in Settings under Backup. It was turned off, but was able to be toggled on and it listed the old default set of folders. I added some user folders of my own and the service began backing up things. I have File History set to back up every 30 minutes and the service rises to the top of the Task Manager list and the source and target drives become active. After I see that it is indeed working properly, I'll probably set the interval back to every hour.

I was under that impression as well. The same goes for Windows Backup and Restore which was also supposed to disappear.

I now use AOMEI backup software to do both tasks.

Just for grins, I ran the "Rest File History to Default in Windows 10" tutorial .bat file and then rebuilt the include folder list to include all of the folders on the "C" drive. I let it run overnight and it backed up all of the folders to an internal 1TB drive. I've added files to a couple of the folders and FileHistory has done the backups as it should. I'm glad they fixed the function, rather than delete it as was thought with v.1803. Next step is to check the System Image function.

Pleased to hear you have it all working. I liked the File History feature but with all the talk of it disappearing I looked elsewhere (as mentioned) and so would not revert back now. Same for System Image and I would really recommend you look at something other than Windows own utility for this. Although it works well (and I've used it extensively), it has fallen behind in flexibility and it also omits certain files on restoring. This is a known issue (the files are classed as non essential) but you find such things as Update History will be missing and (in my case) custom created Photo Albums made using the standard Photo App. Those problems are caused by the VSS:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx

which is actually used by other providers as well (such as AOMEI and Macrium), however on these programs you have the option to override the default setting and use their own which correctly capture and restore all files.

I have used File History for 4 years right from Windows 8.1 and it still works in Windows 10 1803. I had assumed it was going to be absorbed into the new Timeline function but I suspect that has been changed, put back or whatever.

The Windows 10 Image function never worked reliably here, so I use Macrium.

I had a session with MS demonstrating it not working and the error message, all they said was use a USB drive not a network one.

A lot of us wondered about that. Seems Timeline has a quite different purpose from File History, so it remains...

Apparently I'm one of the few that can get it to work reliably. For my main machine I put a system image on a second Data partition as a convenient 'personalised factory reset'. For my test machine (System Two in my specs) I keep multiple system images for all versions of Win10 from 1507 onwards, plus a Win7 image.

I do use Macrium as well to image the whole of both machines to an external HDD, including their Data partitions holding those system images.

My second line of defence is a batch file I wrote to make full or incremental backups of all my user files to an external drive.

File History is my third line of defence, key user folders are saved to a History folder on a network drive. The upgrade to 1709 stopped File History working, I had to point it to the history folder again to restart it. File History continued to work uninterrupted after the upgrade to 1803.

Just an update. I ran a System Image creation onto the same internal 1 TB drive that I'm using for FileHistory. It ran fine. I also created a recovery CD for v.1803. I now have Grandfather/Father/Son sets of backups for System Image and the File History save. As soon as I get an external USB enclosure for an old 250 GB drive, I'll have a second file backup drive to backup the FileHistory drive. FileHistory continues to work as it should adding new or updated files every hour, if needed.
