    Yep I get the exact same error and I've been trying to fix it for the past 3 days and it's making me tear my hair out.

    I'm using Windows 10 Home 64 bit version 1803 OS build 17134.112. I have let Windows do all the updates.

    I formatted my SSD and did a clean install of windows 10 version 1803. I first noticed it happening after installing programs. In fact i made system restore backups frequently and actually performed a system restore backups multiple times as I go through the list of programs I install just to see if I get the Appx staging error.

    I had a working system restore point and then once a newer system restore failed it gave me the error:

    System restore failed while restoring the directory from the restore point.
    Source: AppxStaging
    Destination: %programfiles%\WindowsApps
    An unspecified error occured during System restore. (0x80070005)

    I got this damn error after I installed these programs:

    Backup and sync from google
    Counter Strike (this is 1.6 and not CSGO)
    AMD graphics driver 18.5.1
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64) - 14.0.24123
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86) - 14.0.24123
    Mozilla Firefox 60.0.2 (x64 en-GB)
    Firefox maintenance
    Team Fortress 2

    It's like one of these programs being installed caused the appx staging error.

    I've tried doing all this to try and fix the problem:
    • Uninstalling every program I've ever installed
    • chdsk check
    • Running the Microsoft System File Checker
    • Setting volume shadow copy to automatic

    But nothing fixes it unless I do a clean install of Windows 10.

    Since I can't edit my first post I'll add that I also tried going into settings ->advanced start up ->restart now -> and doing a system restore there but that just changed the error message to:

    An unspecified error occured during System restore. (0x80070003)

    See my post #10 earlier in this thread. It is being worked on by MS. It is a bug, wait for the fix!

    After a year has passed from me posting about the same problem, I want to add an update to this issue: I just tried out System Restore right now and it worked successfully. So the system restore bug is fixed.

    Great
    I use Macrium reflect mainly because the fail rate fore system restore is high.
    Its easy to use and more reliable

    Yes. I don't think I ever saw system restore work on any machine with 1803 on it.

    It started working again in 1809, and now still seems to work in 1903. Mind you, I wouldn't rely on it working every time. Macrium is my preferred 'way back'.

    I have to say that System restore does work right now on my computer with Windows 10 version 1803 but with an updated OS build 17134.885. It didn't work on version 1803 OS build 17134.112 which prompted me to make my post over a year ago.
