    System Restore Fails Every Time

    Hi Guys,

Here is a weird one. On Win 10 Pro, 1803, Build 17134.48.

Every system restore fails on my machine, with the error as in attachment.System Restore Fails Every Time-capture.png

If I try booting from Windows 10 setup USB boot and select Repair, then go to System Restore, I get this message:
To use System Restore you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart Computer, select operating system, then select System Restore.
The weird thing is I only have the one OS, so that makes no sense!

I fortunately image the system regularly, so not a major problem. However I would like to find out what is going on.

    Any ideas?

Update: Cannot access 'WindowsApps' folder - see attachment.System Restore Fails Every Time-capture.png
Could this be the problem, and if so, how to I get access?

Update: Got access to WindowsApps folder. However no change, still get the original error message.

    This is normal...

That's what I take when I ask for a System Restore.

Yes, I know, sfc /scannow - dism /.... - Volume Shadow service etc. : NOTHING!
But a System Restore from installation USB should be the solution : NOTHING!
So, an in-place upgrade should be what I need : NOTHING!
And guess what? A clean install gives the same : NOTHING!

Also, when you disable it, it cannot delete all of its files, holding some GBs of space.

Enough with this 1803 beta crap!
First with Background Apps and now with System Restore, both critical and who knows what's next.

    Back to quiet 1607

Will it be hard to roll back to 1607? How will you do that? I want to learn from you :)

    Just magic...

Actually, I don't follow MS upgrades.
I prefer to wait for 2 years (end of support) and then clean install current upgrade.
So now, I have to wait till a stable and serious built will be released, staying on my secure, perfectly running and very quiet 1607.

PS: Macrium Reflect has made me a good magician...:)

    Hi RolandJS ,
It is possible to go back in time to an old version or build by cleaning the drive and using a Windows iso.
The challenge will be coping with the unexpected Windows updates.
Also you must keep in mind the potential security problems (Spectre and Meltdown, etc.)

Update - not much has changed. Error still exists.
However, my wife's laptop has exactly the same error, but the other family laptop is fine! The only difference is that the desktop and wife's laptop are Win10 Pro, the other laptop is Home.

Also, a very similar error with Microsoft Store not able to update apps, but the 'Home' laptop is fine.

Very strange, maybe a bug in Pro?

Edit - Forgot to add that also did a repair install and there was no change, errors still there!

Update: Bit the bullet and did a fresh install. The system restore worked fine, but the Store still had the same problem.

Decided to restore my image from before the fresh install and wait further developments from Microsoft!

Update: I can get system restore to run fine from Windows Boot USB, selecting Repair and then Advanced and System Restore. It still will not work starting from inside Windows 10.
Also the Microsoft Store problem is still there.
I renamed the WindowsApps folder from WinPE, but when I tried to boot into Windows 10 it was not able to get to the lock screen!

    Update and News from Microsoft.

Spoken to MS today about my 2 issues, this System Restore and apps in the store not updating and here is their response:
"These are known issues with the latest update of Windows, and are related.
Microsoft developer are working on the resolution. The fix will be released soon.
The released date has not been confirmed yet. But it will be coming out soon in the coming days."

Not sure whether to mark as solved yet, best to wait until the fix!
