What types of solutions out there would be a good first step when it comes to protecting the information of a small business?

I would think either Macrium Reflect or StorageCraft Shadow Protect combined with a suitable NAS (Sinology).

NAS = Network Attached Storage.
Macrium and StorageCraft are the backup software to use in conjunction with the NAS.
Ideally, you’d want to image/backup workstations and Servers. You’ll need to configure your NAS with the appropriate amount of storage to handle that.

I know some people who need backup solutions for their small businesses, and I am trying to educate myself on what options are out there so I can advise them and maybe even be their tech support guy.
In the day and age of laptops, I have forgotten most of what I knew about storage. That and what I used to know when I owned a pc tower is now outdated!
So first off, why are you recommending a "NAS"?
Can you explain more about what makes that device unique and why it is better/worse than other choices?
Also, I'm trying to not only figure out a way to backup one pc, but what if a small business has several computers, then what?
Or what if they even have a server?
I am probably over my head, but am hoping you experts can help me get up to speed!

This is a great start! However, because every small business has their own computer environments, end-users' pool of current knowledge and experiences, and so on...I recommend finding a person who is already doing what you're envisioning doing, having him or her tour the small business, determine what hardware and software is best suited to what is wanted, and with you soaking up everything like a sponge ('cause you are going to do all of that going forward) -- the ability to restore any single computer, any single server, or any group of end-user computers. Through reading many threads on The 'Net and my own limited experience with two laptops, I have discovered: The more thought, the more planning, the more hardware and software setup up front, the better the chances of swift, accurate, desirable, reliable, restores.

Well I was hoping to be a "sponge" here and learn some basics - and avoid someone just dumping a load of links like above...
(When you want to learn something new, you just have to pick up a shovel and start digging!)
What would you guess is the network topology for your average ma-and-pa business with less than 10 employees?
Do you think these business even have a network?
Are all of the computers likely daisy-chained together?
Do you think they have a central "server"?
The NAS that @NavyLCDR recommended looks pretty cool, but I don't understand how you would integrate that with even a single computer let alone several...
It's easy to find lots of people online telling me I cannot do something new or challenging. Here is hoping some of you kind gurus can prove the others wrong!
