I would like to know what happens after a clean install also. I plan on activating the key in the time window, but more than likely doing a clean install with the Spring CU.

Think you just install again and enter the key and all should be OK
I wondered on this. If the key is the same for everyone then what are you activating ? How is that key related to you personally so that it could perhaps be used in future ?

I run the Pro version already on my main setup (and its way better than Macrium for ease of use, speed, and most importantly, no constant nags about updates and bug fixes and new versions) but I will try entering the free key on a second system that runs the freeware standard version.

I have just successfully activated my second system by simply entering the input code. It will be interesting to try a clean install of AOMEI after the activation time window has passed.

My experience of AOEMI is that it is slower, less flexible. Macrium's constant nags are good as far as I am concerned as it shows the product is well supported. In a series of tests, I did a while back and repeated recently, only two image packages (Macrium Reflect, and Easesus Todo but very slow) could successfully image backup and restore my 32bit UEFI linx and HP 7 tablets. AOEMI failed of course, along with Paragon, Veeam, and Windows own tool. Never tried Acronis because I refuse to pay for it.

Ditto... but then last I used it was way back when (at EF David Bailey was punting Macrium and SIW2 Aomei) but my oh my..(get it?) I chose the former - no probs since

BTW: the difference between Free and Pro is quite insignificant for home users... if I'm not mistaken?

Before you try the clean install of AOMEI make a copy of the AmCore.dll file and store it on another disk. After the clean install, delete the new AmCore.dll and replace it with the one you saved. Hopefully it will activate. The file is stored at the following location.

    C:\Program Files x(86)\ AOMEI Backupper\AmCore.dll

I have not tried this myself but thanks to SIW2 in post #7 we have an ideal of what to do.

Thanks, I'll try and remember to do that in case of any problems although my second system is running W8.1 and so a clean install isn't on the cards for that one.

On April 10 the new spring creators update is supposed to be released. I'll be doing a clean install shortly afterwards. I'll let you know if it activates.

Restoring the dll file does not reactivate Aomei. I just tested it on my system with the dll I saved after I had activated it the other day. I since had restored an image I made of my system from before I installed Aomei. It says upgrade/register on the menu. Now I shall restore the image I just made prior to installing it.

EDIT: Installed Aomei on pc. Ended any running Aoemi processes. Deleted the amcore.dll in the directory as posted above. Copied the amcore.dll I had saved from when it was activated as pro version. Launched Aomei, was regular version.

They probably changed the way the activation works to bypass that method. Oh well. I am happy as can be with Macrium.

AmCore.dll is not the registration data... Has Never Been...

Just in case the Key does not re-activate in the future...

Use Regedit and export the following registry data for x86
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
    "ProgramData"=

Use Regedit and export the following registry data for x64
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
    "ProgramData"=

then when doing a clean install Merge the Reg File to re-activate Pro Version

    Example
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion]
    "ProgramData"=hex:80,2c,2f,f2,a5,28,8d,af,1e,e2,3e,e2,1e,6f,a0,b2,1d,d3,4d,d2,\
