Those of you ceasing File History operations, I want to learn from you, what kind of routine, regular, backup operations will take FH's place? Onto reliable external media -- full images of OS and Data partitions followed by Incremental and / or differential backups? Using stuff from Macrium Reflect, EaseUS, AOMEI, or other sources?

I've searched this site and Google for the error I get and have found nothing that seems to pertain to this issue exactly. I have been using the file history backup function since installing W10 Home right before the free offer expired and it has been working fine. I was using an internal 250GB hard drive for the backup drive and it got fragmented and too full to defrag. I replaced the drive with a new out of the box 1TB internal drive and formatted it. The drive is shown to be healthy in Device Manager and I can access it fine. I've even copied a folder to it with no issues. I ran the file history set up steps to use this drive and there are the usual folders on it now. The Backup Options page in Settings shows the target drive, that there are no files backed up, and that backup has not been run. The When I try to run the backup to backup all of the folders specified in the setup, I get the following error message in a popup window:
"We can't copy files to your file history drive"
"Failed to initiate user data backup"
    (error 80070005)
I've tried several things, but nothing seems to work. I'm very ignorant on permissions, but puzzled that this worked fine until I changed drives, but I've obviously missed a step somewhere. Logs don't show anything relative to this issue.
First time ever I enabled Fil History today. My target is a NAS drive and I run into the same problem as the OP: (error 80070005) with no files beside config copied to the target drive.
I checked that backup works fine to the same location with another Windows 10 PC.

I fixed the problem by removing all the folders from the backup list beside Documents. I edited the xml in FileHistory config folder to do that, however, there is some UI somewhere to trim the list.

If I was to bet I'd be betting on OneDrive folders upsetting the process.

BTW My Windows-10 version is 21313. There is no trace of Timeline yet or anything to replace FileHistory.

    Hope that helps.

File History - Three years later, 2021 - STILL working great

Two PC's -- FH is still working on BOTH PCs - (But READ the CAVEATS)

    - My main Alienware PC bugs me about once a week when I haven't connected my USB drive, so it can dump all the cached copies of the "LIBRARY FOLDER'S FILES". Seems to still be fine... I was impressed with the level of detail someone wrote about how to coax it forward forever, until I blushed as I saw my name and foget i'd written it here! (I think I will copy, and paste it into it' s own file, and KEEP it on my backup drive). Anyway, THIS PC is happy ---

-- >> CAVEAT File History was forceably broken once by Microsoft's OS updates, and they might do it again. But, I'm STILL on W-10 VERSION / BUILD 1908. Why? By choice. And, it complains but can NEVER "get enough space" to update the OS!! :) -- I never made my partitions larger, so, C: is still only 110 GB, and it always has about 105 GB in use. (I ALSO have set up a few huge folders that point the data, instead to my slow 1 TB, which is also on this PC.)

-- My "BROKEN" Dell 5559 -- The original drive has been throwing drive errors for months, so I finally bought a replacement SSD. But, while trying to coax Macruim to do an image backup, I found that I can't until I repair my CRC error. (I'm posting this CRC problem in a new thread to hopefully resolve this and need help.)

So, while working on this PC (it functions fine for the most part), I decided it would be smart to ensure I can get files back, if I toast / brick the original drive when attempting a repair. Guess what i found after logging all 546,000 files with ZTree?? I looked at my USB drive's "File History" folder and logged it as well. I matched virtually every file I wanted to the ones that were in the folder structure of File history! That means that when messing with Macrium, FH had (finally) dumped its cached FH that it was saving until I reconnected to my USB!! I had already made any folders I wanted to save, into "Libraries", so Microsoft's FH would protect and back them up. It dumped 28 GB of new files to the USB!

So, now if I toast the drive during a repair, I should have all the important data files. (That would stil be bad though, since FH saves the native files and changes ALL their names to ADD a DATE to the filenames, to reflect the dates FH backed it up. Luckily, ZTree is quite capable of renaming 500,000 files if necessary, it a very short amount of time, [once I figued out what I want it to do].)

CAVEAT for the DELL 5559 -- This PC was supposed to be getting updates, but instead was "stuck" at build 1903. That MIGHT be why FH is still working. Updates failed likely because of the hard drive error I kept getting.
