    Acronis installation problem.

    :)Hi all.
I have an interesting problem that has recently cropped up and was wondering if anyone might have a solution to it.

Background to problem: Recently I had been having numerous problems with W10 pro. I therefore bought an oem disk and reinstalled the system onto my computer, having completely (flushed out ) the old problem system.
Apart from a few niggles, the system is now running fine.

Problem: I have used Acronis True Image 2016 for backing up my system for some time now, with just the occasional problem with it, but generally it has been good.
Therefore, naturally, I tried to put it on to my new system (reinstalled system). When I purchased Acronis True Image, I additionally purchased a backup installation disc aswell.

Inserted disc, got approx 70% installed and came up with an error (fatal error), no further explanation.
Tried same again 4 times in total. Same error.
Then tried to download a copy. Same problem.

    Any ideas,guys and gals?
    kind regards.

I concluded 2 years ago Acronis software and is poorly engineered for reasons I won't go into here. I will never uses an Acronis product again based on my experience. I recommend you use the excellent system backup program Macrium Reflect. The free version is suitable for most users. I think the failed Acronis installation has done you a favour!

On one of my computers Macrium displayed an error and cannot be used.
So each software has it's requirements.

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    chkdsk /x /f /r
This may take hours so plan to run overnight.

    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /x /f /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y
    reboot

Use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer.
Then copy and paste > notepad > save to the desktop > post into the thread.

Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials

    2) Run HD Tune:
    http://www.hdtune.com/
Post images into the thread for these results:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

I have Acronis True Image 2016, non-Cloud version. I'm trying to remember why I had installation trouble a few years ago. I'm wondering if dis-engaging from the internet and turning off AV & AM -- trying ATI1016 installation that way -- might work. You would have to copyNpaste that long license number afterwards.

    Few ideas:
    - Acronis installs several drivers. It's possible that something like Secure boot interferes.
    - Or that you're not installing from the admin account.
    - It also installs shell extension for context menu. Windows sometimes objects if another application won't let it close.
    - When you "flushed out" and used new oem disk, uuid and other hardware signatures is likely different and your previous licence is now in the way. That's something else to look into.
    - Have you tried booting from the disk you got? You should be able to make an image from the bootable disk, which in my opinion is the best way to make images.
    - Did you look in the windows event viewer > applications to see what the error is when you install?
    - Push come to shove, post in the 2016 ATI forum. You will likely get good help there from the experts if you describe your problem a bit more clearly than here. The link is:

Steve C, i am having a tendancy to agree with you. I have even gone into my account at Acronis and downloaded backup and even that does not work, Same result;"Installation failed. fatal error during installation".
Bad site I suspect, incorrectly set up, only interested in getting you to buy v2018. Typical,

Roland JS; I tried turning off Kapersky, Malwaresbyte,Crypto Prevent and disconnected from the Internet. Result: No difference, same result!

91fw: I used the origionally purchased as an extra disc from Acronis, to try to install this fiasco, in the first place with no difference in results. Additionally, downloaded a copy from my account on the Acronis site. NO difference!

Zbook' Not ignored you my friend, wil try same shortly. Too busy trying the more straight forward approaches ie; downloading (trying to) from Acronis with no results.

Since reinstalling my system via new installation code and download from Microsoft, system working well. No problems from any other program or installation. Just Acronis!

I'm afraid I can only reinforce what Steve says regarding Acronis. It used to be my number one program of choice, however versions from around 2012 started having issues for me. A couple of years ago I did purchase Acronis again for use with a clean install of W8.1 and found it problematic, buggy and tbh, just downright frustrating to use. I pushed for and got a refund.

Macrium is well thought of and I have used that, but my current favourite is from AOMEI. The freeware version is terrific and includes incremental backup options which are lacking in most other free versions. I was lucky enough to qualify for the Pro version for having helped with some of the translations and screen layouts in the program. AOMEI is very small and lightweight as an install package, and also isn't constantly being updated... it just works.

Of course, the same is true of any purchased software ultimately even Macrium Reflect. The big difference is the Free version of Macrium is properly maintained. Only minor issue is if you get a bug in the Free version, you cannot report it as you are not entitled to support.

I personally got really pissed off with Acronis when I had an issue that was well known and reported well inside the support period and they did nothing for months and waited until next release and told everybody to upgrade to get fix.

Macrium Reflect do get things fixed very quickly or advise workarounds etc.

However, whilst you are pissed off, you are outside any warranty period unless you pay for ongoing support, so regrettably there is SFA you can do othter than ditch them. I had an Acronis Rep tell me it has the best reputation.

I linked him to several links where people clearly showed their disgust at Acronis. I challenged him to find one post saying same about Macrium Reflect, and he replied he did not need to as their market research proved they were the best thought of tool, and I was entitled to my opinion and looked forward to me becoming an Acronis user when I realised how good it was.

Talk about living in Ivory Towers lol.
