File History can be temperamental. My fix for when it stops backing up is below.
    • Stop FH
    • Delete the FH config files at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration
    • Restart FH and select to use the same backup drive as before

Steve. Thanks for the info! Since re-setting the Options in FH seems to have fixed it, I plan to leave well enough alone. But will definitely try your suggestion if it quits working again.

On a more general question: Is there a better Auto Backup application than File History? I don't care about historical versions of any files - only current version in case my hard drive fails. I prefer it to be on my external hard drive (not cloud), and free is always good!

As a product Macrium Reflect. There is a free version.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

I bought it because it has a feature Image Guardian. This is supposed to prevent unauthorized writes to backups. Think ransomware.

I'm using for system images and data.

Macrium Reflect is an excellent backup program. I set it to run automatic schedules to back up to two locations. Note File History only backs up user files and can't restore your OS files & partitions. You can mount any Reflect backup image as a virtual drive and recover any folder or file which is useful if you accidently delete a file. The main advantage of File History is that you can set it to backup changed files quite frequently (I use 3 hrs). However, it's an unreliable program and often doesn't run as often as defined.

If you decide to buy contact them. There was just a discount code posted a little while back, 20% off. I contacted them directly and got discount code for a four pack.
