SFC /SCANNOW is a system file checker. Your system files reside on your Operating System drive (normally C). I thought you said you tried to run it on your external drive? You'd want to run CHKDSK /r on your external drive (and the surface scan).
Running sfc /scannow always gives me an error when I try it after being in the admin cmd in C:
Chkdsk on F: used to give me errors, but I'll try running it again after running Hard Disk Sentinel.

    Thanks.
How full is the external drive? Do you have data on it right now, or is it empty?

Your Read Error Rate is a critical attribute. It can indicate that the magnetic media inside can no longer reliably store information in the affected sector(s).

I'd like you to install Hard Disk Sentinel (they have a 30-day free trial for Windows), and run the Surface Test on the external drive - see what that reports. Then, another CHKDSK /r on the external drive from an admin command prompt.

It won't let me use HDS. https://snag.gy/ManvY6.jpg
Can you point which zip file to use? I've used 3 already.

I'm so sorry; it appears that the surface scan function is disabled in the trial. My mistake - I have a paid version, so didn't realize that.
    Hard Disk Sentinel store

    Let's do Seatools for Windows

You want to run the FULL (long) test, not the short one.

It looks like HDS initially shows the disk is healthy, so I am wondering, have you tried changing the USB cable/USB hub, and running a Macrium backup? Or just try running a Macrium backup, to see if you get any errors?

You might even try a low level format of disk and let it mark off bad sectors.

Yes, but be warned that will erase everything on the drive.

We don't have another USB cable, but I'll try a different port and running Macrium. Thanks!
