Can not create Windows 10 restore point

    Can not create Windows 10 restore point


    Tried to create a Windows 10 restore point. It failed, claiming a "non transient error," and error 0x800423F4.

    Ran scf / scannow and no errors were found.

    Put the PC in safe mode with networking and in safe mode without networking and found that there was no way to create restore points in safe mode. In either version of safe mode, the restore point option did not appear in control panel.

    Volume Shadow Copy service is already running and in automatic mode.

    This error showed up in event viewer:

    The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
    and APPID
    {9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
    to the user khl-PC\khl SID (S-1-5-21-2578728997-788556579-3254953335-1000) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

    Using Windows 10 version 1709, build 16299.192

    There are a number of suggestion in this thread. They range from the simple 'just try again, it may turn out to be transient after all', through 'restart the PC and try again' to 'delete all your previous restore points'. There are some ideas discussing what may have caused it too.

    Solved


    The solution was chkdsk /f /r. Restore points were working normally after that command ran for a while,

    It may just have been a simple file system corruption, but it could also be a warning sign that the drive is wearing out.

    For peace of mind I would now check the drive's health and SMART data with something like CrystalDiskInfo. I prefer to use the Portable Apps version (no install required).
