I didn't have the updated Defender until just now when I checked for updates in Windows Defender Security Centre. My real- time protection got turned off too while the new version of Defender was being installed (big red notifications everywhere :)) but it turned itself back on again shortly. I don't have any other AV to get in the way though.
For those noticing Defender's real-time service turning off temporarily after a definition update, this is expected after a new client update. Feel free to reach out to me if real-time protection doesn't automatically turn itself back on after a couple of seconds.

If you have Malwarebytes Premium running its own Real-time protection Defender's Real-time will not turn back on. You have to change a setting MBAM.

Settings>Windows Action Center>Never register Malwarebytes in the Windows Action Center needs to be selected

I'm not sure why you need to do that. It has never interfered here. After the updates, it remains as set.

Bru, I'm not real sure, but looks like you've got one system (the 15063 CU) a little out of whack! MBAM and Defender worked in harmony all thru the last days of 15063, and still do now in 16199 (FCU). Suggest you check out all your updates. That 15063.447 sounds out-of-date, but I don't have one to look at.
    Got it last night

It worked fine for me too, until yesterday. It changed on two computers. Others reported the same. Based on a posted resolution I changed the setting to what I said (middle setting) and Defender's Real-time protection activated.

I just went back and changed MBAM back to the original setting (top) and so far Defender's Real-time is active. So my guess is there was a glitch with yesterday's update. As you say it does disable Defender but perhaps for some the "fix" needed to be done to get it back. Now it seems the setting could be returned to what it was. I will report back if anything changes.

I should say that I've read many reports of people who do have to use the Never register setting to get Defender to be active with MBAM. That was not my case before the update, and hopefully it now isn't, after. I wonder if those people could change to the recommend setting and have Defender remain active. I'm thinking yes.

    I understand now. Thanks.

And the reason for this update is...

Microsoft has just released an emergency security patch to address a critical remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in its Malware Protection Engine (MPE) that could allow an attacker to take full control of a victim's PC.

edit: It's my wife's computer. She said it just updated. It has the correct Client. Still was a day later than the others. And it did the exact same thing with Malwarebytes as the others. Defender Real-time becomes disabled and I have to do the fix I posted above.

One of my computers has still not updated to the new Client. Why, I do not know. How do I do it manually?

This update now seems to appear in windows update if you go to Settings > Update & security and check for updates, I've just updated one machine that way. On my main machine I got it earlier by opening Defender and manually checking for definitions updates.

I had edited my post that the updated Client did show. But now on my computer I notice the Defender icon is missing from the system tray. I assume a restart will bring it back but obviously there are some issues with this program at the moment.
