Hi Mat98.
what edition of Windows are you running, Home or Pro.
Home does not support this.
Encrypt Files and Folders with EFS in Windows 10
You could try third party products like Veracrypt at veracrypt.com.
Ken
Will that encrypt folders and appreciate your help, thanks.
It should. I use truecrypt which is the early roots of veracrypt. (I should upgrade, I'll make that a winter task.)
The way I use truecrypt is I made a "encrypted container". You decide how big but big enough to hold your stuff. You then open your container, I use a serious password. Once open it becomes a Windows drive. Your apps can open files and you can save files. When you are finished you closed the container.
I'm thinking veracrypt will operate very much the same.
You might also try some of the compression tools. I think 7Zip allows you to encrypt an archive.

Your talking way over my novice head buddy but thank you for your help, the reason I wanted to encrypt a folder was for my transcripts, I'm a bit paranoid about someone stealing my work. thanks Ken.
Sorry Matt. You should find it rather straight forward if you try.
It use to have a very good step by step tutorial to accompany. When I first looked at it years ago I thought exactly like you, this is going to be complicated. I do understand if you decide not to use, only so much time in the day.
Good luck.
