I have followed all of the instructions given to enable access to 'Controlled Folder access' but for whatever reason I do not seem to have this option available to me.
Can anyone throw any light on this for me please.

Hello dalchina, thank you for offering to help, much appreciated.
I have managed to sort this problem and I did it by downloading and installing a Windows update that appears to be number 1709 and the option now appears in the appropriate place.
I am assuming that I will now have some additional security by turning this option to 'On'

Hi, if you had build 1703 (creator's build, 15063) that feature was not available in that build at all.
I'm sorry we assumed you had the appropriate build. (Note- I specify my Windows build in my specs - see My computer below).
For public release it appeared in the Fall Creator's Build (1709), which is why you now see it.Starting with Windows 10 build 16232, Controlled folder access is introduced in Windows Defender Antivirus.

Thanks again dalchina. I have the automatic updates witched on and so I am now wondering why my 'build' wasn't up-to-date and I ended up having to do it manually.
Am I correct in thinking that I will benefit from leaving the Controlled Folder Access option switched on?

Controlled folder access monitors the changes that apps make to files in certain protected folders. If an app attempts to make a change to these files, and the app is blacklisted by the feature, you’ll get a notification about the attempt. You can complement the protected folders with additional locations, and add the apps that you want to allow access to those folders.
Allowing apps can be useful if you’re finding a particular app that you know and trust is being blocked by the Controlled folder access feature.
You can add additional folders to the list of protected folders, but you cannot alter the default list, which includes folders such as Documents, Pictures, Movies, and Desktop. Clearly the degree of protection depends on what the app accesses and which folders are protected.
I have a program which whitelists programs- thus any new (unapproved) program running results in a prompt for approval. That's more comprehensive.
Whatever level of protection you use within Windows, there's going to be a way bad things can happen. We constantly encourage people to use disk imaging routinely so you have a second chance to recover without technical help. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free).
