Well, Since I'm Using Avast! free antivirus since last 6 years on my system's, I don't think i have to worry about saving money. It does quite a good job. :)

Loving jimbo45 in this thread, did your missus run off with an AV developer or something?

Heh, I essentially agree with you. I've never run anti-virus, except for temporary test purposes, and have never had a virus. In the past I've had to deliberately infect test boxes to try out different AVs, lol.

Being without AV is fine for those who know what's what. But, for your average muppet, AV is still a requirement, I feel. Especially if you are the one who gets asked to sort out their bot-laden system.

I run Malwarebytes on any risky files I download and use it to run a system scan now and again.

An antivirus is essential these days when half of the web is packed with pup malwares with software download packages, and hidden crypto ransom wares and other things. Better to have a basic line of defense on the first hand.
And in the mean time Avast! Updated with Win10 support.

    Hi there

Oh dear -- you obviously haven't understood any of my posts.

Please tell me what What Windows defender (W10 version) is if it isn't an AV piece of software.

I didn't say don't use an AV software product --I merely (and re-state too again) stated that ANY 3rd party AV system is 100% UNNECESSARY now when using a HOME computer with W10 installed --the built in system is perfectly good enough.

Anything else is a WASTE OF MONEY AND RESOURCES.

(Corporate stuff -- different conditions apply).

    Cheers

Again.. I think others can make up their own mind as to what they want to use as an AV about now.

    Windows Defender !?
It's the baseline for testing other Antivirus software's. even MS says users to use a Third party AV suit for better protection than from Defender. Any one who trusts Defender on it's abilities need to re consider that. Please do go through these reports and test results, it will give a clear picture why WD ain't much of a security tool at all.
    Av-test Result : https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-8/june-2015/microsoft-windows-defender-4.7-152347/
PCmag report on MSD : http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1926596,00.asp
Windows 10 may be secure enough, But still an additional light and effective free security suit won't hurt at all. :)
