WD real time protection toggle is set to off and grayed out

Ok, I have tried everything. The enable real time protection toggle is set to off and grayed out. I've added the registry DWORD, I've done pretty much everything with policies and still will not turn on. This started today. I have been using MBAM for 4 months with no problems as they have resolved any conflict. No other antivirus has ever touched this machine. I did set limited scans in the security center and now I see no way of reversing that. It is nowhere to be found. Perhaps that is the issue, but without a way to change it I'm stuck. Any suggestions? Using latest Windows Pro update.

If you're using MBAM pro it might have registered itself as the main AV software so has disabled WD, I don't know if this applies to the free version of MBAM. There's a setting to register or deregister MBAM under the program's settings>application>Never register malwarebytes in windows action centre/center.

Malwarebytes had this issue after the Anniversary update. They have since fixed it and the workaround you suggested is unnecessary. I unistalled MBAM and no help. Reinstalled. I have installed Avast Free and I noticed that Windefend now offers me the option to restart real time protection. I have not done so as I don't want to find out how it interacts with Avast. Likely not well... I'm not sure what happened though as the toggle was grayed out and unusable. Now it looks as though it is not grayed out. I

I don't know about that but if you have mbam & av software registered in the maintence & security centre it will warn you about having two active av software - mbam now considers itself as such according to the developers.

Thats another issue. When I open up the maintenance and security center, MBAM used to be there. It's no longer there. Neither is Avast or Windefend. That has me a little baffled as well. Though the option to appear there for MBAM is set to "let Malwarebytes apply the best Windows action settings" so maybe it decided that it should not show. But I know for a fact that it DID show before all this behavior started...

I did that and it still isn't showing. Is there a registry key that might show this?

I'm sure there is but editing the registry is out of my area of knowledge.
Have you checked group policy to see if Defender has been disabled there?
    Also check this website: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/unable...ndows-defender
Have you had any other anti virus program on the computer (Norton, McAfee, Kasperski etc) & if so did you run the provider's own removal tool after uninstall?
Another user on this forum posted this:
Restart Security Center Service. To restart Security Center service, follow these steps:

Press Windows key + R. This will open Run. Alternatively, you can go to Start and search for 'Run'.
In Run dialog box, type 'services.msc' and hit enter.
In Services, search for 'Security Center'.
Right click on 'Security Center' and click on 'Restart'.

I did try restarting Security Center with no luck, but I found this and it worked! http://support.eset.com/kb217/?locale=en_US

Showing Firewall, Antivirus etc. But shows Windows Defender and AVAST. I snoozed Windows Defender but not sure if it will stay snoozed. Might have to uninstall and reinstall AVAST. Though I might just go back to WD if it is now doing real time protection. Thanks for your replies!

Excellent news. If you do decide to remove Avast remember to run their uninstaller for a full cleanup.
