Windows Defender Security Center Won't Stay Open

When I open Windows Defender Security Center, it opens and then closes itself.

I’m running Windows 10 Home, v1703, with the latest updates.

I run Norton Security as my primary AV & firewall with the latest updates.

I did a system reset in the last couple of months.

I have the latest Defender updates according to: https://www.microsoft.com/security/p...tions/adl.aspx

Defender seems to be functioning, but generating the following errors:

    • Event ID 3: The Windows Security Center Service was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor third party AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall.
    • Event ID 16: Error while updating Windows Defender status to SECURITY_PRODUCT_STATE_ON.
    • Event ID 1000:

Faulting application name: SecHealthUI.exe, version: 10.0.15063.0, time stamp: 0x58ccbce5
Faulting module name: SecHealthUIDataModel.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x58ccbc8d
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x000000000015b847
    Faulting process id: 0x27f0
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d2f12745cc2b1f
    Faulting application path: C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.SecHealthUI_cw5n1h2txyewy\SecHealthUI.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.SecHealthUI_cw5n1h2txyewy\SecHealthUIDataModel.dll
    Report Id: bcac3ab1-757d-47fb-8d4f-c089173b11e0
    Faulting package full name: Microsoft.Windows.SecHealthUI_10.0.15063.0_neutral__cw5n1h2txyewy
    Faulting package-relative application ID: SecHealthUI

I have tried options 3 and 5 in this tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html. Options 1 and 2 aren’t available to me since the settings window won’t stay open. Option 4 isn’t available for Windows Home.

As I said above, AFAICT, Defender seems to be working, but the Defender Security window won’t stay open and it’s generating a lot of errors.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting and/or fixing this issue?

When had these issues occurred? Before the system reset or afterwards?

Can you please follow the instructions provided here:

Run SFC Command in Windows 10 Windows 10 Customization Tutorials

And post back a screenshot please? I'd like to see if the integrity of C:\Program Files\Windows Defender is harmed.

Also please run a health scan in the same command prompt window:

    Code:
    dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
Then we can diagnose further if these run clean.

    Screenshot attached. No problems found.

I noticed the problems post reset.

I run Norton Security as my primary AV & firewall with the latest updates.

With all due respect, why are you concerned with the WD Security Center ? Do you use WD as a secondary scan ? Norton has the same system info listed in the WD Security Center.

Not an expert, but I would think errors are common if you try to engage WD while using a 3rd party antivirus. Do you disable Norton prior to trying to engage WD ?

WD provides an additional layer of protection and actually becomes idle while a new active AV is installed and provides preliminary scanning. Errors are not common as it does not interfere.

    elprice7345,

Try and boot into safe mode and see how Windows Defender reacts and open up it's GUI please.

    Report back.

Rebooted into Safe mode with and without networking with the same result:
I can open Windows Settings, but when I click on Update & security, the window disappears. So in Safe Mode, I can't even access the Update window. At least in regular mode, I can get to the update screen.

This beats me. The SecHealthUI.exe component seems to be killed because it is reading corrupted settings or files. Did you alter any components in the registry or tweak Windows Defender at any point in time?

AFAIK I didn't alter any Defender settings.

After doing more research, I believe it might be Norton interfering with Defender. A setting probably got doinked somehow.

I have 3 Windows 10 computers running Norton and I noticed the Windows Defender settings screens looked different in the other 2 computers.

I'm going to try removing and reinstalling Norton and see if that fixes the problem.

I don't have enough time right now, but will report back tomorrow with my results

Remove Norton (I recommend you using another AV such as Kaspersky, Avira, BitDefender or Symantec if you have the means change it) and see how Windows 10 reacts.

Good luck, I will watch the thread.

Removed Norton, got Defender working, Reinstalled Norton and still have the same problem.

I noticed a couple of differences between my computers. The Defender settings screens look different.

The good defender settings only shows a version for Antimalware. Bad settings shows version numbers for all items.

The Security & Maintenance screen on the bad computer thinks the Windows firewall is off and doesn't see that the Norton Firewall is on.

I'm presuming the screen shots from the good computer are correct since Defender is working correctly.

Is that what the screens should look like?

What other steps can I take?
