As others have mentioned, you can still get infected, just not by someone else on your network.

There is no way to prevent infections where you deliberately run a program. That program will have access to any files you have access to (one of the reasons for UAC is to prevent a virus from infecting system files, or files for other users who also use that PC).

I have just checked my PC and found that SMB 1/CFIS is ticked by default. Why is this the case? Sould it not be a feature that is normally disabled instead?

I tried turning off SMB1. I turned it back on again when I discovered I could no longer see the USB HDD that's plugged into my router and shared out. Others have reported the same problem with their NAS drives.

My SMB1 has been turned off for last 3 days, no issues that I can see. :)
My advice is turn it off, then see if you have any problems.

Does your router manufacturer have a firmware update to fix that?

You can in theory disable SMB1 via cmd line and enable SMB2/3 only, MS howto for Win8 https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...ws-server-2012,
Doesn't appear to be much use on Win10 home though. It appears that unticking SMB1 in Windows features or disabling it by command line removes common files required for Workstation! After about 8 hours of trying to get SMB2/3 working without SMB1 and ending up with a dead Network even after re-enabling it, I gave up and restored the image I took before starting to mess with it, need to be able to talk to the Linux stuff.

Just disabling SMB1 in Features wiped out my networked Linux PC's.
