Officials Fear Russia Could Try to Target US Through Popular Software

Russia’s growing aggression toward the United States has deepened concerns among U.S. officials that Russian spies might try to exploit one of the world’s most respected cybersecurity firms to snoop on Americans or sabotage key U.S. systems, according to an ABC News investigation.

Products from the company, Kaspersky Lab, based in Moscow, are widely used in homes, businesses and government agencies throughout the United States, including the Bureau of Prisons. Kaspersky Lab’s products are stocked on the shelves of Target and Best Buy, which also sells laptops loaded by manufacturers with the firm’s anti-virus software.

But in a secret memorandum sent last month to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Senate Intelligence Committee raised possible red flags about Kaspersky Lab and urged the intelligence community to address potential risks posed by the company’s powerful market position.“This [is an] important national security issue,” declared the bipartisan memorandum, described to ABC News by congressional sources.

Personally I don't think there's any concern currently for users of Kaspersky.

Considering, that US is afraid of its own shadows, I would not take it seriously, but for the record, Kaspersky team is working with US department to accommodate their products for US government, the same way Chinese government works with Microsoft. From the other point of view of course, governments always tell people to use domestic products, so they should lead by example, US makes quality security software like Norton, but in the end, it comes down to simple things like Kaspersky being cheaper than Norton. :)

I consider Bitdefender and Kaspersky as the best user security software, ESET for business.

Some UK banks provide a free Kaspersky licence for their customers which makes it very cheap!

No idea, but I found this information interesting. Also a local big chain store is reporting that they will no longer sell Kaspersky software in any of there stores. Best Buy.

I've never seen it offered, on the Asus site, BUT I suppose I could have missed it too.
Does seem to come on the DVD / CD you get when you buy the Motherboard, but most of those apps are real old too, and those dvd's / cd's have not been updated in a long time.

I find this stuff about Kaspersky possibly spying on users ironic when Windows 10 does it out in the open.

I wonder if the same holds true for users of the Russian browser, Yandex. I've tried it in he past and liked it but was always a bit concerned due to its country of origin. I guess the same could be said about Opera (Chinese), which I also tried and liked.
