    Oh, Shivisky!!!

My daughter got what she said was Ransomware yesterday on her Lenovo Lappy with an earlier RTM of Windows 10! I don't think she's on the Creative Update yet.

She says she was supposed to call an 800 number to unlock it. It came in on Edge!

She said Edge opens your last page and that Ransomware takes advantage of that. She said, "You have to trick it with a new search in Cortana to open a fresh page and then delete everything in cache. Then a full scan to get its roots."

I'm not completely sure it was Ransomware, but conversely, the Lappy is used for a franchise they own, so . . .

let simrick or another guru take a look at it. Could only be a scam. It's easy to check if your files are encrypted, thou...

Regarding Edge and the start page. You can set it to empty, new tab etc., like in any other browser. I'm not a fan of last page, either...

If it holds your computer hostage, it's a form of ransomware - whether it encrypts or not.
The answer is to disconnect from the internet, use Task Manager to kill the browser process, and run Ccleaner on the browsers, clearing out everything.

WCry is so mean Microsoft issues patch for 3 unsupported Windows versions | Ars Technica

WCry is so mean Microsoft issues patch for 3 unsupported Windows versions

Decommissioned for years, Windows XP, 8, and Server 2003 get emergency update.
The possibility that ransomware can spread virally across the Internet without any form of end-user interaction is a chilling prospect. Internet-wide scans performed in recent weeks show that as many as 2.3 million computers have the necessary port 445 exposed to the Internet. Those scans also reveal that 1.3 million Windows machines haven't been patched.

'Accidental hero' halts ransomware attack and warns: this is not over | Technology | The Guardian

Expert who stopped spread of attack by activating software’s ‘kill switch’ says criminals will ‘change the code and start again’
The kill switch was hardcoded into the malware in case the creator wanted to stop it spreading. This involved a very long nonsensical domain name that the malware makes a request to – just as if it was looking up any website – and if the request comes back and shows that the domain is live, the kill switch takes effect and the malware stops spreading. The domain cost $10.69 and was immediately registering thousands of connections every second.
The kill switch won’t help anyone whose computer is already infected with the ransomware, and it’s possible that there are other variants of the malware with different kill switches that will continue to spread.

Just read a report showing the differences between the English NHS system that was compromised and the Welsh NHS which was not.

The Welsh system had recently been hardened and was fully patched. One of its automatic protections was to reject all and any email originating from NHS England

Next will be critical infrastructures, like nuclear plants. Just wait.
