"Kill switch slowly stops the spread of deadly ransomware Michael Kan (ARN) 13 May, 2017 13:58"

A security researcher who goes by the name MalwareTech found that he could activate the kill switch by registering the web domain and posting a page on it.

MalwareTech's original intention was to track the ransomware's spread through the domain it was contacting. “It came to light that a side effect of us registering the domain stopped the spread of the infection,” he said in an email.

Security firm Malwarebytes and Cisco’s Talos security group reported the same findings and said new ransomware infections appear to have slowed since the kill switch was activated.

However, Malwarebytes researcher Jerome Segura said it’s too early to tell whether the kill switch will stop the Wana Decryptor attack for good.

I just got this is a newsletter:

A massive ransomware attack spread across the globe today, locking up thousands of hospital, telecommunications, and utilities systems in nearly 100 countries. The attack used data stolen from the NSA to exploit vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows and deliver the WanaCrypt0r ransomware. The demand was for $300 per PC.
While the ransomware was first detected wreaking havoc in emergency rooms and doctors' offices in the UK, the infection quickly spread worldwide, including to the US.
We're alerting you to reassure you that if you're currently using the premium version (or the premium trial) of Malwarebytes with real-time protection turned on, you are protected from this threat. Our premium technology blocks the WanaCrypt0r ransomware before it can encrypt your files. (The free version of Malwarebytes, however, does not protect you against WanaCrypt0r. To see which version you have, open up your Malwarebytes software and look for the version name at the top of the window.) Learn more about Malwarebytes

    Hi there

Always some snivelling company trying to exploit misfortunes by others.

I'd have thought what a great idea it would be to allow users say a 2 - 5 day period FREE to undo the problem -- then people could buy the product if they wanted to.

I think I'd rather put my trust in Ms fixing the problem rather than 3rd party companies as it's Ms OS in the first place and they'd take MORE time to debug the OS than Ms's people.

Conspiracy theories abound --it was a company deliberately planting this stuff so it could justify selling "Protection" or even Govts themselves so taxpayers could be persuaded to pony up a load more USD/GBP/EUR/RUB etc etc to pay for better I.T systems - in spite of enough evidence to show that almost ANY GOVT I.T project on the planet usually is highly over budget, and if it works at all only does a tiny bit of what it was supposed to do.

    Cheers

not sure why your animosity to MWB? It was in a newsletter to me because I already have MWB Premium. Also, all over the media are reports of NHS computers shutting down in todays attack. Comfirmed by the way by various Health authorities. Trusting MS to fix a problem is not always the answer, look at how many times they have to 'fix' windows with security updates etc.

@jimbo45 Malwarebytes does offer a free 30? day premium trial to those who are worried about this particular pandemic - obviously if you have already used the trial to use the "free" subset of functions then you cannot use another Trial, (this is not a malwarebytes thing all trials tend to be this way). I am personally still in a Huff with malwarebytes (I am still licenced until the end of the year for Pro, but do not trust the product any more after the problems with Version 3)

However the pandemic may be on the way to being over as the original code required trigger access to a web address, which has now been registered by an anti Malware professional and this seems to have hit the infection pretty hard,

There is already protection for all fully patched Windows operating systems, (not XP obviously as this is out of support. I also worry about those Windows 7 stalwarts who are "paranoid" about updates and may not have full protection in place

    @Barman58

    Thanks for the explanation

BTW if Swansea win their game they should be safe -- they should be able to beat Sunderland !!!!

I'm waiting to see though if anybody will try a "Class action Lawsuit" against the NSA -- would be interesting.

I hope though the UK NHS doesn't go BONKERS against lower level I.T staff who aren't the people responsible for this -- and from a few colleagues I know who work in the DVLA in Swansea - trying to get even an emergency fix on some of those public service computers is nothing but an exercise in frustration. Can take DAYS or even Weeks before it passes all the change controls --mind you the DVLA doesn't seem to have been hacked (yet).

The management (I.e the CEO's) at the top of these organisations who are usually GROSSLY OVERPAID should carry the can here -- but I don't suppose any of them will suffer any punishment whatsoever. They won't even get Fired / Sacked. The worst that *Might Happen* is that they will be asked to resign -- no doubt on HUGE pensions etc etc. -- Who needs the Freemasons !!!!!.

    Cheers

I was just thinking if another countries hacking tools had hit US infrastructure, I'm pretty sure Mr Trump would of hit twitter by now demanding compensation.
