It is my understanding the latest MB (3.0) is standalone. However, there have been issues.

The less you have in the background the better workflow will be. Defender is smooth, efficient, not intrusive and free.See if you run the latest definition there: Access Denied

I have been using Windows Defender since the upgrading to Windows 10, and I installed Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware yesterday.

Malwarebytes was fine for LAST CENTURY -- these days threats are as I keep saying are of a different order of magnitude and variety.

Ransomware if it's written properly (sic !!!!!) will defeat any of these A/V systems - I'll bet --although I haven't done programming for years that I could come up with a program that can defeat Malwarebytes while concurrently watching football (Man Utd or similar) and drinking Beer.

If you get threatened with Ransomware simply unplug computer / hard switch off and restore from external backup -- No Ransomware on the planet can get at your data if it's not physically attached to your Computer - don't forget on RESTORE to disconnect Internet while performing the Restore.

WD is fine - runs in Background and uses minimal resources -- updated very regularly too.

On Home computers IMO anything else is usually GROSSLY overkill and unnecessary too. -- Again HOME Networks --- Corporate stuff has totally different problems to defend against.

A.V vendors these days realize that they have pretty weak offerings so they thrive on "SCAREWARE.

For 99.99% of people out there using Windows WD is perfectly OK - I doubt if they will EVER get stung by Ransomware - and even if they do the solution is simple as I've outlined above.

Long gone are the days of the "simple Virus" and a load of malware -- it's all about MAKING MONEY now - and this is usually done by sophisticated scamming and phishing techniques -- no Software can guard you against these (possibly some future A.I (Artificial Intelligence / Robot type ) system might - but what if the A.I system could also invent new scams etc !! horrible thought !!!!).

As an afterthought - seems to me the people who have the most A.V stuff installed on their machines seem to get the most infections.

Conspiracy theory --could some of these Software Vendors deliberately introduce rogue warnings to keep boosting Sales !!!! who knows -- people try and make money every which way !!!!.

Hi there

sorry to labour the point - but what is the purpose of installing something - even if it uses minimal resources -- if it doesn't DO anything useful !!!! - especially if you PAY for the product.

These companies aren't idiotic - even FREE ones will get you on to some sort of "Sales list" - companies don't give away products without expecting some payback down the line even if it's totally indirect.

WD is OK as it's built into Windows.

Anything else IMO is just a 100% waste of time unless you work in a tightly controlled environment - say Mossad, CIA, Police etc and I've agreed that these types of Networks DO need sophisticated protection.

It's 2017 now --realize the NEW threats out there rather than worry about "Old stuff".
