new to windows 10 and wondering about windows defender

Good evening, just got a Dell Latitude E5400 last night, it is running Windows 10 Pro, had a windows 7 laptop that decided to self destruct when trying to program a digital ham radio.... so ended up getting this one, it works great so far but since I usually use Mac computers and been away from windows for the past few years except for using the Toshiba for weather radar and programming radios, not real sure if I need to find an alternate anti virus for windows 10 or is windows defender good enough? I was using Comodo internet security for the Toshiba laptop.

For Home Use I consider Defender Enough Protection along with Malwarebytes for On Demand Scanning or Realtime Depending on if you can afford the Pay version

Been running it myself for a while now, previously used Avast for years, not minding Defender now as system is fast, scans show always clean, of course your use of Computer, and mine maybe different.

Could always try Defender, and see how you like it to start with

I used to run Bitdefender Internet Suite, which claims to be on top of the list regarding accuracy and efficiency. Ever since Windows IPs broke compatibility, I have been running Windows Defender only. No issues so far.

I do BitDefender offline scans from time to time, just to make sure all is OK. Neither Windows Defender nor BitDefender has found anything suspicious.

I guess lately I don't surf on suspicious web sites as much, and don't download anything that looks suspicious.

I don't go to pirate websites...that I know of anyway, and pretty much just use the internet for web surfing and emails. don't really do any online banking or things like that either. just don't want to turn on the computer one day and have to deal with hours of trying to rebuild it into a working system

Nothing is 100% but I think Windows Defender combined with all other Windows built in protections will keep you relatively safe. One more safety layer would be to run your daily tasks in a non Administrator environment (most users run as Admin). This way it will be really hard for some malware to install on your system without asking for Admin access rights.

That nicely sums it up, it is good enough, but why to settle for less, when you could have more for free?! In all AV tests, WD always ends up as the last in detection. Not to mention, that sometimes it causes 100% CPU/HDD usage.

I like WD as "enough basic" protection but I have switched to AVAST because I was having a lot of trouble with some games, specially Grim Dawn, even if I had an exclusion for my whole Steam folder.

i usually stick with Defender as I find that I don't need much protection on my Windows boxes. I do most of my web surfing on my Mac. I've not really run into performance issues with Defender, so it's never bothered me. I don't like to install anymore more than I absolutely need.

With that said, I've used Aviva, Avast and Kapersky and all 3 of them have been ok.

It's been said before that no AV product is 100% effective, 100% of the time, against 100% of the malware being pushed out. If there was such a product we'd all be using it. There's no harm in trying different products to see how they work with your computer(s). The general rule of thumb is to run only one real-time scanner. Running multiple real-time scans could conflict with each other and cause serious issues with your machine (like turning it into a paperweight.) Make a system image of your functioning computer(s) so in the event of an "oops" moment you can reinstall the image in about 30 minutes and be back up and running. Many people recommend the free Macrium Reflect.

It would also be beneficial to use the security products' own uninstaller to remove all remnants before installing a new product.
