    Defender update

    Hi all

I have a problem with windows defender.
It was set up to download and install updates automatically, but lately it will only
Tell me “you need an update” and I then have to go towindows update ad click on download and install the update. This is only inwindows defender. Windows updates will download and installs by them self. SometimesI get a popup telling me it has to reboot. So what is wrong with windows defender????
Where can I find the setting to let it install by itself?

    Thanks
    Sven

Windows Defender won't update under Windows 10 - Microsoft Community

    Check the above link.

You may also want to run a scan with another AV (ESET, Malwarebytes) and do a System Restore which will reset your registry.

Thanks for the link, but I don't get error codes or failure to download.
the problem is that I have to manually download the update after being told that there is an update.
it used to download by itself and install. I don't know what changed. I will run Malwarebytes later.
    Thanks

The below is from the link provided above. Recommend you read thru that entire link and "google" for other info, including using the search bar above. Lastly, I would consider a System Restore. You may have to reinstall some apps and software, but files will be safe.

I would suggest you to check if Windows defender service is running and set as automatic. Please follow these steps:

    a. Press Windows + R keys together, type services.msc in run window and press Enter.
    b. Right click "Windows Defender service" and click properties.
    c. Make sure that service status is running and startup type is automatic.
    d. If not, select startup type as automatic and click "Start".
    e. Click apply and ok.

I went to the tutorial section on this BBS and downloaded a reg file that tells windows to download and install all updates.
I guess I will find out if that will work in a few days, because I get defender updates almost every day.
for now I will mark this thread solved
    Thanks for your help
