Windows 10: Windows Defender auto closes after ~5s
Windows Defender auto closes after ~5s
I click the tray icon or execute it through start menu, after a little while the window closes. But it is still running. Ideas?

Welcome to the Forum!
Have you run the System File Checker (SFC} to see if there's something amiss?
(use Option 3: This option scans the integrity of all system files and repairs files with problems (ex: corrupted or modified) when possible.)
If files need fixed, you can use the following:
DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image
Hi, thanks fr the suggestion. Yes, I have tried that, it shows no errors. Should I go for the other options in the page you suggested? Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and others.
Please clarify. You execute a scan and then the WD window closes but the scan is still in progress ? You then click the WD icon in the taskbar ?
If you are opening another tab or program, that is normal if the scan is being completed.

If sfc /scannow did not find any corrupted or modified system files, if you wish, you can use the CheckHealth or the ScanHealth command to conform status.
After reading, torre's post, maybe I am misunderstanding the issue. Please clarify, as requested. Thanks!

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow
command up to 3 times
with Fast Startup
turned off and restarting the computer
after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.
If not, then run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow
If still not, then you could refresh
Windows 10, or do a system restore
using a restore point dated before the bad system file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a system restore until you find a older restore point that may work.
No, I can't do a manual scan (when it closes the scan is canceled), it is running because it says it is active, and it finds threats, and cleans them.
I will try the other suggestions and report later
Well, short of restoring, so far nothing worked. I think I'll refrain from doing that in favor of a 3rd party antivirus for the moment. Avira and malwarebytes found no problems.
Running windows defender when leaving computer.
When return the next day, chrome and outlook have been closed, and
computer is back to login screen.
Because not looking at computer untill following day,
not sure if it is closing the programs...
I did an upgrade (not a clean install) to Win 10 Pro on an older laptop running Win 7 Pro. This was just over 30 days ago. All seemed to go fine and the system is working fine, with a few minor hiccups.
I have no intentions to rollback to Win 7...
Cant seem to activate Windows Defender (also).
Does Bit Defender prohibit Windows Defender from being activated ?
Any idea why I can't activate ?
Assuming I can, somehow, do I want both ?
Did windows defender perform auto update and auto scan daily? Since i noticed it is quite often that the definition is outdated and i need to updated it manually.
