Normally, there is an error code posted when System Restore fails. If so, please post.

May try to run a scan with WD or Malwarebytes to check for malware.

Also, may run sfc/scannow to repair any damaged files prior to next restore attempt. And you may want to disable/remove any 3rd party software that may be effecting the restore. Again, the System Restore procedure normally informs of which software may be effected.

    msg i get is

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on computer .Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (080070005)

windows defender only antivirus running , had Zonealarm , was uninstalled. before restore attempt.

    sfc /scannow found nothing wrong.

pc runs ok just stumped why restore is failing.

The above was a previous thread on the subject. You may search for more using the search option above or google "error 080070005 system restore."

    WD should not interfere.

Check your registry and C drive for leftover remnants of Zone Alarm which may be interfering. If Zone Alarm does not provide an uninstaller for their product, you may want to scan with Revo Uninstaller. At times I have read that it is sometimes necessary to reinstall the product and then uninstall using Revo Uninstaller or similar product to remove all remnants.

Another option may be to boot into a safe mode or use the recovery/repair option on your system where System Restore is normally listed as an option.

    Let us know the result.
