Hi, do you mean you've used this?
AVG | Download tools and utilities

After using the tool, reboot the PC. Try enabling Defender again.

You might want to run CCleaner after the uninstall tool & see if it finds any orphan files associated with AVG, also do a reg scan with CCleaner to make sure all the reg entries are gone.

CCleaner - Free Download - Piriform

Although, the AVG removal tool should uninstall it & revert control back to Defender.

You may end up having to search the registry for AVG entries. Regscanner (free) is convenient for this as it lists all results, unlike regedit.

Or you may be lucky if you search the web and find someone who has posted the relevant registry entry.

keeps saying I have another antivirus installed
I installed the free windows 10 upgrade while avg was running (my mistake)
I fixed on a windows 7 machine by rolling back update removing avg then re upgrading to windows 10 for free
but on this machine I am using now which was windows 8.1 I waited to long to roll back the free upgrade
so now ive been searching the internet for a fix for 6 months

I once had this sort of problem swapping from one AV to another.

    1. Create a System Restore point.
    2. Download & install Regscanner
    3. Launch it and scan for AVG
    4. Now you need to be careful. Inspect each result in turn- Open Regedit from Regscanner (rt click on the result) and delete it if happy.

Restart, see if you can use Defender etc.

I don't know what I did or didn't do but I used the link I pasted a couple of more times the way you guys said on the page and kept looking at the registry, just looking and looked at system services and the computer started to lock up while I was surfing the www so I rebooted now defender is working (the story of my life I stumbled upon it)
