Avira Free Antivirus 2016 Automatic Update Problem

    Hi there

I have got Avira running on Windows 10 home and has been great. But recently the automatic update function has stopped working. It works fine on my other surface, just my laptop seems to be having problems. Any ideas.

I also have a current post on Avira Answers.

Also welcome any other suggestions for another free antivirus that doesn't have a lot of annoying notifications for adds.

You don't have CryptoPrevent on that system do you?
Windows Defender is pretty good now.

    Hi:

Since the "which is best AV" and "free or paid or no AV at all" question has been asked 6.022140857(74)×1023 times here and at other fora, I won't clutter the forum. There is no "right" or "best" answer to suit all computers and users.

But, yep, WD (MSE under Win7/Vista) may be the only "free" AV that does not include some sort of ads, popups, bundled toolbars, or junk.
The 3rd-party "free" AVs are largely a marketing technique by the AV vendors to entice users to purchase the paid version.
The ones that do not include annoying ads or prompts to upgrade very often provide fewer features, reduced support or other drawbacks.
The cost of a robust, paid, AV works out to pennies a day per system (or less) and it's worth the expense.

    Thank you both.

I have heard recently that Windows Defender has been relatively popular so I have gone with that. As an added step I have also choosen to install malwarebytes too. So I should be good from here on, thanks again.
