Just a note - if you have difficulty getting the Bitdefender ISO on the flash drive, you can try using Rufus. I've used it many times and it works very well. Slartybart is correct about the disk selection. Normally you'd want to use a CD-R (non-re-writable).

I'd only try creating Bitdefender Rescue (BR) one more time. BR was one of two options - TDSSKiller or BR.

If you manage to create the BR flash drive, use it.

<!> If you still have trouble putting BR on an external device - change gears to TDSSKiller

Download the exe version of TDSSKiller

Accept the download agreement - scroll down to read make the checkbox active

After it is downloaded, follow the tutorial from Step 5. Configure
You won't have to download anything else in the tut - forget about the VirusTotal uploader, that was a convenience tool.

Running TDSSKiller per the tut, loads in monitor mode which is almost as good as running offline.

Okay, I am still a little frustrated with what I am trying to accomplish today. I have 2 laptops, and I believe the Toshiba only takes the DVD RW, why??? The HP, this one, has never appreciated using its optical drive, as in movies, cds, but will copy files without much problems if I use DVD RW. Funny how both are geared for the more costly accessories, hmmm, but I digress.

I know I should think beforehand of the obvious, before take instructions to the "T" (whatever that actually means, never made the connection), but while downloading to the flash drive my HP went to "sleep" due to my power saving settings. I had to reformat my flash, and restart the download. It just finished, YAY! Let's see what happens next......all Good Stuff, right!

That was quick! Do I eject my flash drive, or what? How do I know it ran?

You can explorer the flash drive to see what's on it.

This is what's on a Bitdefender CD I burned a while back. Contents should be the same for a flash drive

Now that you have the Rescue drive, you want to boot from it.

    Restart the machine
When the screen goes dark, repeatedly tap the F9 key
On the Boot options menu, choose the USB device

After initializing, the rescue will scan and report any threats
    Clean the threats

    Logs are in C:\RescueCD logs

    Post the logs

I did boot from it from the flash, but it was straight after the download. Does that make a difference, I would not think it should make one. I started looking for any indication it ran (i.e. logs, Windows folders, something), and found msmqlog.bin files ran today under Network Service, a Recovery.dat file, an H file, Config settings...
Attachment 97494, I am certain there are much more, but NO log directly referenced on the flash or any other drives. I will try, again.

    p.s. busy working

You're right, shouldn't make a difference unless the Flash isn't quite right.

Please show me the contents of the flash drive as I showed the contents of my RescueCD in my previous post.
    There's nothing in Attachment 97494

I just want to be sure that Bitdefender Rescue ran an offline scan. It would have been obvious - there's a cosmic dog splash screen.

Why did it not run when everything, with the exception to "display"? let it default was as you described. I just did not notice any initiation, and booted like normal (after "boot options," "USB" enter)?

The contents look fine - thanks

    The normal sequence is
Boot to the flash drive - you said it did
OS initializes - you didn't see that?
Cosmic dog background asks for display (timeouts to default) - you said you let it default

Other than that I can't tell what occured.

You then say that it booted normally - to Windows?

Did you see the Cosmic Dog? That's the best indication that BitDefender Rescue booted.

    Try this:
    Connect the Bitdefender flash drive

    File Explorer
    This PC

Put the following text in the search box:

    bdguilog

The log was written to C:\RescueCD Logs on my machine, but I used a CD
It's possible that the logs are written to the flash drive - don't know

Without the log or your visual confirmation of the scan and subsequent remediation, I can't be certain if anything was done.
That was the purpose of this exercise.

I just looked around to find images of the process - I think I forgot one step, which is a text menu on the Cosmic Dog screen to Start in a language

Remove PUP application from DVD Drive (F:) CDROM-grubbitdefenderstart.png

I don't know if there's a timeout on that menu. Did you see the language menu ?

I'll boot up to the Rescue CD I have and check some things.

Please try booting to Bitdefender again
Pay attention to every screen and make a note - that will help me figure out what is going on.
You could take a picture of the screens with a phone, table, or camera of the steps and post them - that would be the best thing.
