Windows 10041 cannot update Windows Defender

After install and first update of Windows Defender, I can not update Defender, getting error 0x800704ec. Anyone else seeing this problem and might have found a solution? Attempted both through Defender GUI and Settings Update. Neither work, say try again later.

And, who would really place the security of their PC in the hands of Windows Defender?

I surely WON'T! Not when there are many FREE programs that can do the job so much better.

    Good luck Mate!

    Mate,

Not that it matters, but most venders do not support Windows 10 Tech Preview. So it might be expected that Windows Defender on a none critical machine would suffice. Since you care, I also use SRP (Software Restriction Policy) built into Professional. Thanks for your input though.

Since the advent of Windows 8, Windows Defender/Smart Screen Filtering fully integrated, I never pay attention to PC security!

    Hi there

Chapter and verse please for that obviously total Bovine statement.

Note : ANY comparative report on AV software is a load of Horses---te anyway since the results are compiled usually several WEEKS previously and in that interval things could have changed significantly.

Windows defender is actually built in to the OS kernel which is changing from build to build. The 3rd party people don't have the time to stabilize any of their offerings during these release builds - and they don't have access to Windows kernel source.

In any case these days people are far more likely to suffer FRAUD via SCAMS and "Look alike" web sites etc rather than Viruses. People have moved on -- there's more profit in SCAMMING than installing some miserable piece of malware on an old age pensioners computer.

The whole FREE AV software market should have moved on by now - it's UN-NECESSARY and REDUNDANT. Windows defender works -- and even if you download Music / video from torrents, provided the files are not in archive (zip etc and are only in their native format I don't see how for example an .mp4 file could harm your computer even if did contain a virus as say VLC player either would not play it or would just treat the offending part as NOISE so how would the virus install itself on to your machine.

Downloading the wrong software from some sites (deliberately designed to confuse people), accepting "toolbars" / other offers or running programs ostensibly looking for drivers or registry hacks are more likely to be a problem and if these are installed as LEGITIMATE windows programs how is any AV software looking for viruses going to detect it.

There's so much FUD around Windows and AV software -- people need to know how an OS executes "executable files" - then they can make a sensible choice.

I have been known to use torrents myself -- most recently was build 10036 which was leaked prior to build 10041. I have NEVER had a VIRUS and have only ever used the bog standard Ms stuff - MSE on W7 and Windows defender on W8/W10.

(Note my remarks refer to HOME / Individual machines --protecting professional / corporate Networks is another issue entirely as other issues are in play there - however in those instances I suspect management would be protecting their networks by more robust means than some Free software).

    Cheers
