    MS Security Essentials

WInX comes with Defender, but I prefer Security Essentials. Is there a way to upgrade to MS Security Essentials?

    Hello Mayagrafix,

Starting with Windows 8, Windows Defender has been replaced with a renamed MSE now. It's the same with a Windows Defender shell.

You will not be able to install MSE in Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 because of this.

Windows Defender is virtually the same product. I'm curious as to what aspect you prefer about MSE.

    Hi there

the INTERFACE / UI may look the same but it's a different product --Windows Defender was not a good name as it confuses people with the more or less useless offering on W7 of the same name. MSE was the Pre-cursor / development model for the new Windows defender. MSE ran as a separate application on top of the OS but Windows defender is built in as a system process right into the kernel and in theory should be able to do a better job.

In any case the best protection as always is YOU the USER when using the Internet.

    Cheers

The user isn't always the best defence against internet nasties. I'd imagine a lot of older people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I've had to rescue several older people in my neighbourhood from their actions. So in these situations multi layered security is the answer.

I am using Avast Internet Security and it does a fine job on 7 and 10.
