The paid version works fine for me, I can turn it off, or let it startup with Windows, no issues at all.

I feel your frustration. I too only use MB on demand to do manual scans, run it then close it . . .but now I keep seeing the MB icon in the taskbar system tray

Don't confuse these two. Left one is come and go when you run a scan. Right one (notification) will appear any time MBAM is started, free or otherwise, and will remain unless it is exited.

Neither have I until the latest update . .. not confusing anything either.

Despite not starting with windows and not launching the appllication during a session, my system tray goes from left to right, the MB icon appears at random. Even if I do launch MB then quit it by right clicking on the tray icon . . . the icon can still reappear later.

I use the free version and updated two machines to 3.7.1.2839 yesterday. Now, malwarebytes starts with windows on both, despite disabling the feature in settings Anyone else have this issue?
That's a glitch with MBAM settings post update. The fix is fairly simple...

    Latest Version of Malwarebytes-mbam-startup-options-fix.png

After you do this, MBAM will not start with Windows when set to Off.

That's just it, despite that setting it was still starting and even when shut down was shoving in Settings > Update and security > Windows security like on the picture I posted earlier.

Well if it does not work, you could also use CCleaner to turn it off from starting up at boot.....even the free version.

    Hi there

Sorry any mawarebytes people who might be reading this but I think you probably already agree in principle anyway.

However good this software was in the past it's totally unnecessary now for HOME computers --WD will work just fine. (Note I'm only dealing with HOME computers -- not Corporates / office Lan's / cloud etc where other considerations apply).

Name of the game isn't hacking some old Mom and pop computer any more in C21 --it's making money via fake websites, dubious emails, fake tax refund emails, identity theft, bank frauds, people giving out too much info on social media sites etc.

These products were designed in C20 (last century) when Windows was really leaky and hackers were "hip or in" --these days it's making money via scamming - nobody is really interested in infecting individual computers.

Even Torrent sites like the old "----te Bay" and YTS are cleaning up their acts - they don't want to lose revenue by becoming a source of malware. Note also that so many of those sorts of sites are blocked these days in a lot of countries so unless you live in somewhere like Iceland which still has probably the most free Internet on the planet you will have to get round blocks via TOR / ONION etc -- and if you are expert enough at that you aren't to likely to be a victim of viral infections. !!!

Don't get me wrong these companies like Malwarebytes were brilliant a few years ago but their time has come and gone.

Most of these products are sold on the fear of Virus infections rather than the reality these days --it's actually quite difficult to get infected when WD is running -- even from some of the older warez sites -- but who uses those anyway anymore.

Professional versions for LAN's (corporate) etc are still necessary -- all sorts of other stuff applies e,g Denial of service attacks, ransomware etc. But Home computers -- no longer necessary -- who's going to spend a lot of time and effort in creating a Denial of service on some miserable sub teens bedroom home computer or some 84 year old grandma!!!!

    Cheers

I disagree, I visit about 300+ websites a week for work and I've seen quite a few legitimate websites that have been infected. MBM always blocks them but I've never had a peep from WD, I assume because MBM got there first. MBM gives me that extra level of assurance.
