Tx again. D/L AdwCleaner and installed, it will not run at all. I can see the agreement notification for about 1 second then nothing. Repeated scans, clean and reinstall etc. no luck. Might have to resort to an image restore but don't want to give up yet

Well AdwCleaner should have worked ....try SuperAntiSpyware Free version next..... If that don't work, try and remember your last changes that you've done.

That is really unusual. ADWCleaner doesn't really get installed, it just runs....it's standalone. You're in Win 10 CU, so there is another scan you can run that goes deeper. If Mike's SAS doesn't fix, do a Defender Offline Scan. It will reboot your machine and run with nothing but itself in kinda "Super Safe Mode", you'll see it running. Then it will reboot.

Tx for hanging in there with me. I ran SAS x2, it shows clean. d/l MS malicious SW removal tool KB890830, this will not run. Did the advanced Defender offline scan, it ran for about 5 minutes, did not identify anything, rebooted as expected. Tried SAS again it was clean. Tried Adwarecleaner and KB890830 again, both will not run. At the present time, MBAM not installed although tried the latest beta version, same results.

Before you take an axe to it, maybe an in-place repair would help. Bit lengthy process, but you wouldn't loose anything.

Do you have some group policies setup preventing them from running?

I have never "messed" with policies, assume they are ms defaults??

Everything was "normal" on Sunday, Monday morning this happened.

Have you tried booting to Kyhi's rescue media and running Malwarebytes from it on the OS drive?
    -boot to media
-connect to internet and update the virus defs in MBAM
-check the box in MBAM to scan for rootkits
-run a complete scan on the OS drive

When all else fails, do a reset. I did the reset and now everything runs as normal. MBAM AdwareCleaner etc ran and had no "critters" to report. Major task now getting everything loaded and back to the way I had it before. Don't know what the problem might have been. Thanks to all for their help.

Great news, glad you got everything fixed. Now would be a good time to make a complete image backup using the free version of Macrium Reflect, then do regular image backups to a 2nd drive. :)
