    Is the the free version of Malwarebytes 3 after the trial expires essentially the same as the old Malwarebytes free i.e. does the free version only scan for malware and is not an antivirus substitute?

    Yes it is limited to scans only. MB 3 is an improved version over MB 2 even in the Free version.

    The Premium is marketed as a "AV substitute" as its 4 additional features are designed to stop anything from getting into your system where an AV will catch things afterward. How well it works is above my pay grade. I do have the Premium and run it with Norton Security. MB 3 Free now has a Monthly scheduled scan available.

    Here is a link and scroll down to see the difference in Premium and Free.

    @Phone Man

    How does it work to stop anything from getting into your system? I thought most AV's done this anyway? What do you mean by an AV will catch things afterward? Do you mean as most AV's would detect a file with a virus only as you open it?

    Does that mean it scans downloaded files before they're copied to the computer or before they're opened? I'm not sure if Chrome does this already? Any files I'm unsure of I usually scan them first with virustotal.com...

    Edit: Is the real time protection meant to be malware only or full AV?
