They tend to spread notification of updates over several weeks to spread the load on the servers they say. Actually it's probably so that not too many people are affected if it all goes belly up.

That is the definition update and is checked every hour so it changes through out the day.

I have newer gotten a notification. I guess because on MS Update Tuesday I check a few programs for updates before doing an image with Macrium so everything is current. I check MB, Norton, Firefox, Vivaldi, and check their extensions and Flash. I also run sfc/scannow after all updates are done.

Just my routine on 3 systems.

Thanks, I did not know that.

I assumed that it updated the virus protection abilities, I guess I was wrong.

Yes I get it now, it updates when scan is started.

It is checked for changes every hour I think. In v6 there was a separate schedule for it. It is also updated at the beginning of a scan.
