Windows Firewall not working Error Code:0x6D9

    Hello!

    I just did a fresh clean install of Windows 10. I was just installing all my programs back and then suddenly I get an error saying Windows Firewall is not working. In detail it says;

The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code: 0x6D9.

My options are to use "recommended settings" but it does not work.

Everything that I have search on the internet gives me solutions to other previous versions of windows and nothing on this error with Windows 10!

I have not installed any additional virus software, i'm just using whatever windows 10 provides me.

Please help, I don't want to have to do yet another clean install!

    Thank you

Hello and welcome to Ten Forums!

What do you get when you view the settings for Windows Defender and scroll down? Is it the same as below:

    Thanks for the reply!

Actually no it is not the same! I never noticed everything on the windows defender page is all disabled and only shows me the version for Animalware Client Version 4.9.10586.0.

When I tried to open windows defender, it says that another program has taken over and to go to security and maintenance to check the status of my protection. It says for me to enable it as a group policy.

Ill try and see if I can enable it but any other further help you can give me is appreciated!

    thank you again

I managed to get windows defender back up and running. I did have a virus program that I tried using to see if there was a virus effecting the windows firewall status with no problems showing.

However, my windows firewall is still not working leaving me with the only option to "Use recommended settings" which does not do anything for me

What happens when you type firewall in the search box and try and load Windows Firewall with Advanced Security?

Do you get an Actions pane where you can select Diagnose and Repair?

It doesn't work. I've just decided to repair/reinstall Windows as I'm speaking. It's unfortunate I have to do it again but from the looks if it it's the best option.

Thanks for your help in trying though

That's a bit worrisome if you didn't install anything. It could be the settings for Windows themselves, or it could mean malware is present.

I'm seeing references to Error code: 0x6D9 being associated with a rootkit in some cases.

Suggest you scan with TDSSKiller to rule that possibility out. Even if you did a clean install, some rootkits can survive that unless you wipe the entire drive before reinstalling. Or perhaps one of your programs had malware when you reinstalled them.

    TDSSKiller Download

    Note   Note
When running TDSSKiller, launch the program, click on the blue text "Change Parameters" & check the box marked "Detect TDLFS File system." Click OK & then run the scan.

Also a scan with Malwarebytes would be a good idea to see if anything is present. The free version will work fine.

Have you tried turning it back on from Control Panel - Security and Maintenance?

There are big chances the antivirus you're using might have blocked Windows Firewall access for security reasons and if so there should be an active "resolve problem" message listed under the Security tab and all you have to do is activate firewall access again by clicking Turn on now.

Sometimes some users manually disable the firewall to block certain app/game from communicating with the internet to prevent it from updating and/or being found out it's not a genuine copy of the app/game.

People tend to forget a dependent service Base Filtering Engine. Also, if all profiles are off, it will stop by itself again.

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:

    sc config BFE start= auto
    sc config MpsSvc start= auto
    net start BFE
    net start MpsSvc
netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state on
    netsh advfirewall reset
