windows defender definitions out of date

but I did a manual update just now and did not get any error message
and windows update says it is up to date
nevertheless, WD reports it is out of date.
but it shows green bar at top.

and after a restart, when I go to WD settings it says that cloud and sample submission is off. This is despite the fact that I turned it on.

There are some cases like these earlier(red it on a different forum)
The best way to sort out and ensure you have the latest definitions is to download them from MMPC:
Get the latest definitions - Microsoft Malware Protection Center

    hope that helps.

right. I did that. But something is messed up here because after doing that, it still says out of date.
I am also worried by the fact that the cloud protection shuts itself off.

Did you by chance have a different AV on your OS at one time or another? If so, there could be remnants of it causing probs.

Have you tried running a SFC to see if there are any problems that it might be able to fix? Option 3 is the recommended one.

If you have not run any malware scanners, suggest you d/l & run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The free version will work fine. Scan & Quarantine anything it finds.

thanks. I had avira free at one point. I hesitated to run their removal tool when I uninstalled because it warned that it might mess up the network driver.

okay, so I mounted the win10 ISO and ran an "update", in other words, it reinstalled my current windows build, saving apps and personal files. This fixed my defender problems. WD now reports that the virus definitions are up to date, and the cloud protection is turned on. That's a pretty good trick. It's an awful lot more convenient than reinstalling!

but it seems to have created a new 450 mb recovery partition, at the end of the hard drive. The old one is at the beginning of the hard drive. Now I have two recovery partitions, both the same size, although the new one is slightly more full.
