Bottom line :
Use what you like to use, Defender ain't enough.
http://av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-8/ does not mention one of the best AV softwares Vipre Antivirus.
I have used this for years with not one problem.
If you don't download a lot of files, then you might be able to survive with Windows Defender. But just because you don't download files yourself doesn't mean that a hacked website couldn't use an exploit to download viruses.
It helps, in some ways, to read all the reviews and comparisons, but for me it comes down to one point. If Defender was a full-feature, adequate AV software on it's own, the others would sue Microsoft. That's why we have to pay for a DVD software app. Anytime Microsoft tries to put in a feature that other companies provide, they get sued.
I'm not saying you need to pay for software, but I wouldn't feel comfortable using just Defender.
