Mine is 10 pro clean install, no TPM and only the 2 gpedit changes (TPM and AES 256) made.

Maybe you should consider resetting gpo to default and see (if you don't have too many other customisations). I guess this method would still work Local Group Policy - Reset to Default - Windows 7 Help Forums

Maybe now I'll get around to setting up bitlocker - I'd been sort of putting it off :)

    All the best, Hali

For this and a few other reasons, I did a clean re-install of Win 10 Pro today. The first thing I tried was the same bitlocker test, and it failed once again. I guess it's time to try to contact Microsoft.

Sorry to hear that - perhaps someone else here will pick it up but I can't help really as it's working for me. If you do want me to test something at any point though just say.

Best of luck with it anyway.

Have you tried another USB key, or another USB port on your computer?

Yes - three different USB sticks in three different ports - same result every time.

Well, here's a good laugh. I contacted the MS help desk today via live chat. After explaining my problem, the tech told me I'd have to contact HP (oem) to get "the key to unlock the bitlocker on my machine"! I have no idea what she was talking about, but I dropped off the conversation there. I guess I'll look at other software.

Success! As part of researching this problem, and partially some other things, I came across a post today in another area of this site that mentioned the SlimDrivers utility. Knowing that some of my system level drivers probably needed updating, I downloaded and ran this utility. It identified several drivers that updates were available for. After updating these drivers, I tested bitlocker on a data drive again, and everything is working they way I wanted it to! Woot!

That's good news. What did you update? Seems weird that wrong driver would mean bitlocker writes wrong key to the USB.

By the way the new release of Windows 10 (1511 th2 fall update) has changed the encryption method for bitlocker so it can now use XTS-AES instead of AES-CBC. Time to test again... What's new in BitLocker? (Windows)

They were all motherboard-level drivers, primarily chipset and storage controller. Of course, as soon as I get it working, the latest update changes the game with new options!
