Thanks, that does delete the registry key but unfortunately didn't fix Defender. I've installed a third party AV instead which is a shame because Defender has worked well for me for the last couple of years. I've given up trying to fix it. Even the in place upgrade didn't fix it.
that is pretty strange, i know there is group policy for defender but you would think those would be disabled by default.
The problem happened after using "system restore" to fix another issue. Defender doesn't work correctly since then so I'll use something else until I need to clean install windows.

This could be one of the ridiculous post have ever made. But, I have been wondering what will happen if I backup all of the registry keys, reset Windows 10, and then restore the registry keys? Will it affect device driver? Will the device be bricked?
