Windows Defender does not occur in the program list, because it is a feature of windows.
I have never seen a feature of windows in the program list.

You can't remove Windows Defender, only disable it.

When you have another AntiVirus program installed, Windows Defender disables itself to prevent problems due to multiple active AV programs. But still, the answer will be
This is really good to hear and makes me feel safer. Whoosh! I'm brand new at learning Windows 10 and sometimes I feel like I'm walking up a cliff on stilts. I need to force feed myself to "read directions". I'm so lousy at that. I'm rattling because I'm happy. <BG>

If you are capable of removing windows defender, then the Operating System would probably crash.
Windows is built to function with windows defender, this means that when you remove something from its antivirus, the catch net will be there when windows finds out it can't load the removed file.
Then I would suggest you to reinstall windows, or an inplace upgrade (repair) if you're lucky enough to boot into windows.

The catch net is the bluescreen (when windows crashes), I don't know if you're aware of this but it looks like

Defender won't normally show up unless you are in it's opinion overdue a scan in which case the notifications thingy will tell you.

So long as it's showing as enabled in the Update and Security settings it will be or should be working and you can run it from the entry at the bottom of the settings, however pinning it to the start menu or putting a shortcut on the desktop is quicker, as in a one step process to open it without having to go through settings.
Yes, I just did both those things. thanks.

I didn't check that. Oops! I just checked it in Security Settings and Windows Defender is not there. McAfee is there. Now I'm back to thinking should I or shouldn't I uninstall McAfee.
