    Bitlocker query

I was looking into encrypting just one folder on drive C: and came across this..........

"Why not just bitlock whole of C drive - that is more secure, as user can only access data if they know your Windows password."

The thread is a year old so I did not add to it. Is this really true or is the phrase just poorly worded? Can a Bitlockered hard drive be accessed if an intruder knows the Windows password? Surely that makes BL pointless? There is a way of changing a Win password by booting from a Windows USB stick I believe, which according to the quote above allows access to the hard drive.

Welcome to the forum. It's like anything else if you know the password you can get access it you get the pc you can read data on the bus to access a bit locked drive if it's just one folder you could winrar it with a password

All it takes is to know the PIN. Bitlocker is a toy for kids, it has it's merit, but I would never use it to secure data.

What would you use instead? Why? In what way(s) is the alternative better?

For a few files as suggested something like 7zip to encrypt files and file names.
For a permanent storage veracrypt or a cloud with zero knowledge encryption.

Bitlocker is not used for a single folder. However, you could put that folder on a separate partition and bitock that, and you need the bitlocker password when you access drive

Overall, it is important to understand how Bitlocker interacts with PCs with a TPM (as required by Windows 11).

This reply is based on laptops with a tpm.
You can bitlock the C drive and add password (and get the log password to store elsewhere).

When you login normally, the pc will unlock as bitlocker details are stored in TPM.

So it is important to use a strong Windows password.

    So why bother with bitlocker?

If laptop gets stolen, and strong password, the thief could remove drive and attach to another pc to read its contents.

If drive is bitlocked, thief will not be able to read it on another device.

If you really want to make laptop more secure, you can add a bitlocker PIN (not the Windows PIN) that you have to enter every time you turn on pc.

This is coupled with a strong windows password. It is also a good idea to use a strong bios password.

By the way - The statement bitlocker is a toy for kids is ridiculous as it is used by many major corporations.
