$Extend\RmMetadata files prevent safe removal of external hdd

I use an external HDD for backups.
Lately safe removal of this disk has become impossible.
This is apparently due to some $Extend\RmMetadata files being held by System.

I have searched and searched but can find no way round this problem apart from rebooting system or just unplugging the drive.
    I run Malwarebytes.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Try using LockHunter.

Once installed, right-click on a drive then, from the context menu, choose What's locking this folder:
$Extend\RmMetadata files prevent safe removal of external hdd-lockhunter_context.png

Next, select the System process holding the metadata files open and unlock its hold on the drive:

    Hope this helps...

Hi, there's a useful thread here on this problem:
windows 7 - How to safely remove a device blocked by the System process with a handle on \$Extend\$RmMetadata\$Txf - Super User

Read carefully and there's a possible 'fix' and ways to work around this.

Personally I always use (despite 'Quick Removal') a small program: USB Safely Remove.

This is very neat. Orignally and for years I used a giveaway version, then finally bought a license.

    Thank you both.

I discovered USB Safely Remove after some more searching last night. Just what I need.

Seems Lockhunter is from the same stable, so I'll take a look at it.
