How can I get rid of a virus alert from defender?

Defender detected a virus on a CD and since it obviously cannot remove, clean or quarantine it (because it's a CD), the alert is stuck in the UI and I always get a pop-up in the taskbar and the icon has a red mark.

I did clear the protection history but that only cleared the past, resolved one.

EDIT: I want to remove the alert, not allow the threat.

EDIT 2: I'm NOT using the CD anymore, got rid of it. I don't need that file and it never even left the CD. I just want to remove the alert.

White list the file. You could go into defender and make an expception for this program or get an alternative tool ( which I found browsing this page ) and use that to whitelist it.

I know that, but I don't want a random file in the whitelist.

I want to know where defender stores this information so I can delete it, and if that's not possible, I wouldn't mind to even reset the entire thing, as long as it doesn't affect the firewall.

Setting an exclusion for this file in its current location is the only remedy available to users.

How can I fully reset defender to default state?

Just to clarify, I don't want to use that file and don't need it. I never even copied it from the CD or even directly accessed it. I simply want to remove the alert with whatever method possible (short of re-installing windows).

I know of no method for doing that. And it would re-detect that file the next time you put in that CD anyway so you would not have achieved anything.
I believe that an Exclusion is your only option.

I destroyed the CD. It's gone forever.

    Understand your frustration.

Have you scanned with another AV to insure your system is clean ? Personally, I would do a clean install or a repair upgrade, but I am an impatient type.

I'm not upset about the CD. I'm annoyed that I cannot remove the alert in any way apparently except for allowing a now nonexistent file that I never even accessed.

This is such a stupid design choice by MS. You either allow the file or remove/clean/quarantine it, and if the latter doesn't work and the former isn't really an option, then tough luck, you now got a permanent alert.

Most other antivirus software allow you to dismiss an alert without taking any specific action.

The system is clean. That "virus" never did anything. It was an ancient DOS file that I never even ran. It wasn't even the file I was after on the CD.

Unless someone finds a way to actually reset defender, I guess I'll do a re-install at some point just to get rid of that alert.
