I had recently uninstalled Avast antivirus, but then ended up re-installing it after a while...
Now, every time I open Firefox (current version) I get the following warning message...
I've looked up that link, and it *does* appear to be a problem site... but I don't know where that is coming from??
I only have a few addons installed, and they are all addons that I've used for *years*, without ever previously getting a message like this...

Does anyone have any suggestion on how I can find what is generating this link??

Huh?? I have re-installed Avast... in fact, it is Avast that is giving the warning about this site...
and this warning is only occurring in Firefox...

Again you have Avast installed, you are going to get warnings from it telling you about possible malicious issues.

Well, except that I've never previously gotten this particular warning about Firefox, from Avast, in the past, and I've been using Avast (and Firefox) for years now...

My question, though, is:
How do I find out what is generating that call to that website?? My extensions have not changed recently, and I open up to my standard starting page (East Bay Times)...

From the research that I've done, that website *does* appear to be a questionable site, so Avast is correct in flagging it...
But I don't know where that link is being called from...

In Firefox, go to Help and click on "Troubleshoot Mode".

This will run Firefox with NO extensions... like Safe Mode.
See if the problem still exists.


Also... if you post or PM the link to the site in question, I can see if my Firefox or Bitdefender reacts the way yours does.
Cause I'm definitely not typing that whole URL.



You can also tell Firefox to block dangerous websites.
So if you're using Avast extensions in Firefox... you can remove those.

It is from Avast, my suggestion is to use the Uninstaller to remove Avast then see if you get that message !

You're getting this because you've got the notoriously ineffective, unreliable, inaccurate, unstable Avast installed.

The fact that you didn't get it before is irrelevant, it just means Avast has made another change to their detection algorithm that fails to meet acceptable standards. Hence the ever increasing possibilities of numerous false positives.

Note the "Upgrade your protection" .... bordering on scam/spam. A marketing ploy, nothing to do with infections, just a hook to trap the unsuspecting.

Clean Firefox's cache, it is probably javascript stored in there. Avast is one of a few great AVs able to detect it.

Final note on this topic: It turns out that the Avast warning was valid; this is one of several very questionable sites which are being used by Bay Area News Groups news sites, including MercuryNews.com and EastBayTimes.com. I was able to block those odd sites in my ad blocker program, and am no longer getting these notices from Avast.
