    Is Windows Security Doing This?

This sort of ties into my previous topic in Drivers & Hardware

Basically, I usually run multiple Macrium Reflect backups (redundancy reasons) if my current backups are either one month or more old, or if i'm about to do something potentially dangerous and i don't want to lose my data. I back it all up onto three Hard Drives using a powered hotswap dock, and when the Hard Drive(s) in question usually power on, after they've fully spun up/powered up, it usually takes about two or three seconds for the hard drive in question to show up in my devices and drives list alongside my C: and D: drives (and the one optical disk drive). Recently though, its taken longer for the Backup Drive(s) to show up in the Devices & Drives list alongside my System Drives and the optical disk drive. I tested this out on my father's desktop and it works just fine, no abnormal slow down whatsoever. So i had a thought and put my computer in SafeBoot (Minimal) mode and tried again. I had no abnormal problems then. I ran a repair install of my OS, did the DISM & SFC scan, no problems found. Ran a chkdsk /r /f, thinking that'd do it, but it didn't, so im left with only one possibility: Windows Security is the culprit (somehow)

I got no more ideas beyond whatever Window Security is doing to slow my backup stuff down somehow, but is there a way to get it to stop being like this, because it didn't do this before, but now it is. Also, for the record, i did run a full windows Security scan, and a full super antispyware scan, did not find anything at all.

Other possibility. Something could be tripping up explorer or slowing it down. Typically corrupt media files on you currently mounted drives (not your backup drives) or else folder template/ Folder Type Discovery might be an issue especially for mixed content folders.

Or else there's an issue with the connector on your machine although your safe mode boot seems to suggest that there is no problem with that.

If you have backups try disabling folder type discovery and see if that makes a difference.

EDIT: Other option to try. Exclude the other drives from scanning by Defender.

I did both of those just now at the time of this post. And i will try making another backup of my D: Storage drive to see if it errs again. But i am considering that, maybe, it might also be the hard drive dock im using (I think i grabbed it from newegg years ago, and its definitely got some age on it), so i will be considering grabbing a replacement.

so i was able to make my usual backups, even after dealing with the increased drive loading time. I had only ONE hiccup where the hard drive dock lost connection during the third and final D: drive backup, but after i powered the dock off, gave it a bit of rest, and tried again, i got the third and final backup done. What i decided to do was to make the 1st OS backup, turn the dock off, unplug both its power cable and usb cable, and give it at least ten or so minutes of rest time, then reconnect everything and power it back on for the subsequent backups. it added to the usual time it took before, but overall everything went fine as it could've gone

tomorrow ill be getting another dock delivered and see if somehow i have better luck with it, also getting a front I/O usb replacement module from ebay, but tbh, that is an entirely separate thing i was long overdue in doing (think the one i currently have is having issues).

I think i can mark this as solved now. I got my new dock, tested it out, and it works better than my current HDD dock. I also tested the USB cable from the old dock with the new dock just in-case it was only the USB cord wearing out, and the cable from the old dock works fine with the new dock. i made three new sets of backups, and i had absolutely NO problems with the new dock.

So TL;DR i needed a new dock after all, windows security was not the issue. Side note, the front i/o usb ports are going a bit dead, so either next tuesday or friday, im replacing it
