Microsoft Defender won't scan an individual file

I must be doing something wrong.
1. I right click a file & choose "Scan with Microsoft Defender"
2. The windows security Virus & threat protection opens
3. I choose "scan now"
4. I dialog box opens & asks me to choose a folder, which I do.
5. Microsoft Defender starts scanning thousands of files.

I only want to scan the file I've right-clicked on, so I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas?
