SERIOUS SECURITY Question: Can headphones run malware/viruses???

Down the rabbit hole.. it is an expression when you start to really dig in deep into details.. It is used in the movie Matrix and others.. it is also used in the linux nerd world.. and i think even in windows-nerd world.

So down the rabbit hole we go when we really dig in to new information and spends hours weeks on researching and learning. :)

and i also say as the others already have said.. i have never heard of anyone that has manage to transmit malware over analog audio 3.5mm earphones to an analog output port.
Look how analog audio works and that will answer your question.

Headphones can transmit the cold and flu virus.


There's not enough data storage things in headphones for someone to be able to place a virus or malware in them.
Headphones are really just magnets, some coils of wire, some paper or plastic cones, maybe a switch and a few wires.

It's like asking if a spoon or a fork could get infected.



Things that CAN get infected hold data, like software or firmware.
Just plain hardware, that doesn't have software or firmware, can't get infected.

You need a pile of transistors to hold data. Each transistor is a switch, it can be ON or OFF.
When it's ON, it's a 1 (one). When it's off it's a 0 (zero).

You've probably heard of Binary. Like how all data is really just 1's and 0's
Here's a chart showing the binary code for common letters, numbers and symbols.
Each letter for example needs 8 transistors to hold the binary values that represent that letter.
This is a very basic example, but it should give you the general idea.
