    Microsoft Safety Scanner error

Been trying to run this tool for last couple of days but keep getting an error that doesn't seem to appear on MS's page. I've downloaded it several times with no luck. Anyone know what this means? Thanks in advance for any assistance, and no rush on this as I was really only trying to run it out of curiosity (don't suspect any infection).

    And Happy Easter folks.

    Debug shows:

Microsoft Safety Scanner v1.387, (build 1.387.468.0)
    Started On Sun Apr 9 11:13:43 2023

Failed to submit MAPS report: 0x80510002
Failed to submit clean hearbeat MAPS report: 0x80510002

    Exception Caught: 0x80070005
Microsoft Safety Scanner Finished On Sun Apr 9 11:13:44 2023

    Return code: 1 (0x1)

I think I figured this out so no assistance needed.

I did but didn't help. After a lot of searching I figured out it's probably because I have ransomware and a few settings locked up tight. Anyway, I scanned my computer thoroughly and it's clean.

Tried to install Powertoys a few days ago and got errors again so got a little concerned. Today I created a new admin account and both installed/ran successfully, with no viruses found. So either my original user account is corrupted or I've set set something in the past to lock it down. Either way, since no problems were found I'm not too concerned. Might migrate over to the new account over the next few days.

Are you saying that you had ransomware and Defender successfully removed it?
"ransomware" not some other kind of malware

No, sorry, didn't word that correctly. I meant I have controlled folder access, tamper protection etc. all set to On. Did a bit of reading and seems this can block some apps from installing. Could that be possible?

Or again, possibly corrupted user profile?

controlled folder access, tamper protection etc are intended to stop
controlled folder access - changes to those folders
tamper protection - Defender itself being changed

You would need to make sure that controlled folder access folders were set to allow changes for things you want to install.
Enable or Disable Controlled Folder Access - TenForumsTutorials
Change Windows Defender Controlled Folder Access Settings - TenForumsTutorials
Add Protected Folders to Controlled Folder Access - TenForumsTutorials

I don't know what your reference to a corrupted user profile is about.

    All the best,

And if you do get problems with Controlled folder access that cannot be solved by the the tutorial threads, I suggest you start a new thread with Controlled folder access in its title.
That will attract the attention of members who know about the subject.

    Best of luck,
    And thanks for the rep,
