TPM-WMI errors

As of today, I have noticed my win10 login takes around a minute and a half and appears to freeze before entering the windows desktop. ( I am experienced enough not to touch anything until I am 100% sure the system has crashed )

After running the usual SFC and CHKDSK to see if there are errors, no errors found, I looked at the event viewer to notice this has suddenly appeared as of today:-

The system firmware returned an error The parameter is incorrect. when attempting to update a Secure Boot variable. For more information, please see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2169931

I am assuming this is related to the login issue because before today windows would load very quickly.

Has anyone seen this? My computer is an aging, but, it a very productive system and it feels ms are pushing win11/new builds with TPM2 ( I am cynical about large corps ). I also noticed an update around December 2022, I can't remember the KB, which required a UEFI update which always failed and locked the system for a bit before returning to normal.

Does anyone know of a way to prevent this from happening? The long login time may be something else and I can live with that, but, I am out of ideas to troubleshoot this issue. My normal response would be an in-place repair or clean install, but, if this is coming from ms then that won't resolve the issue.

Turn off secure boot i just noticed your specs. wouldn't you need to add a TPM header on that motherboard? it is old and probably does not have TPM on it hence why its complain about secure boot.

yeah i just thought about it anything older than 6th gen needs a TPM addon. X79 might of came with it but i doubt it back then it was only on server grade stuff.

I will try that, I will double-check, but, I think the MB does have TPM....The thing is, why has this started today....TPM has not been an issue until now. My computer is old, I can still make large-format Photoshop ( CC2023 ) images ( up to 300cm wide @200ppi ) and create my Virtual Galleries in Unreal 5.1 and Unity without any issues so there has been no need to get a new system.

I actually do not want a new system because MS is trying to force updates on me.

One other thing to note was I had a hell of a time this morning logging into Creative Cloud and Epic servers, they just would not connect with my logins. Can I assume this is related? I eventually logged in though....

It's an easy check to make.

1. Right-click on Start, select Windows PowerShell (Admin).

2. When the PowerShell console opens copy/paste/type Get-Tpm then press RETURN/ENTER.

The results will show if a TPM module is present. See here for more info.

Yeah X79 is still really powerful although slow on paper it is a good platform and it can take lots of ram the platform has lots of life in it still. The Epic server thing won't be related i wouldn't think.

So looking at the Windows Update log KB5012170 was installed yesterday (03-04-23), this was the update that constantly failed in December. So I guess it managed to install in the end.

I uninstalled the update....and the issue still persists, I guess it has logged the bios firmware somewhere....or something.

I'll try to disable the Secure Boot next.....as I really don't want to get a 13700k, 64gb, 3080RTX..etc at the moment

I built it myself ages ago with longevity in mind. The x79 does have memory controller issues though. Sometimes, my 32gb RAM comes up as 24gb until the CPU reaches 30 -34 degrees, after a reboot, it's fine...I put it down to old age

yeah well it was top tier for its time and the first time we saw an orientation like that with quad channel memory also sandybridgeE architecture being closely inline with its server side counter part was top tier then so its got lots of life in it.
