Unable to access Windows Defender Firewall settings

    G'morning, gang.

Windows Defender Firewall won't allow me to access my Firewall settings:

I discovered this a few weeks ago, but have no idea when the problem actually kicked in.

My computing habits are largely unchanging and conservative. The only "new" thing I've done lately was to run an online ESET virus scan in January. (Not sure why that would have gummed up the works, but I mention it for what it's worth.)

I've attempted a handful of solutions suggested by various websites, but no dice. If there's a fix that doesn't involve reinstalling Windows, I'd love to hear it.

    Kind thanks for your help.

    Brooks

And your Windows Defender Firewall service is running too?

...and also check that The Storage Service is running.

Both should be running and on automatic.

And I guess you don't bother to answer...

Hi, does your tray icon for Defender appear as a shield with a green tick, or something else?

    Basics (as usual):
    a. Check your disk(s) e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (SSDs too) - excellent - full functional trial/giveaway)
Basic SMART check - Crystal Disk info

    b. If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt

    c. If ok, run
    SFC /SCANNOW
similarly. Note if it passes. Advise if it does or not.

If those pass and you still have the same problem, perform an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data
For that, as you are running a very old build, 1903, you need a build 1903 iso file, freely downloadable (see relevant Tutorial from the searchable Tutorials section).

Noted you use Malwarebytes Premium. Apparently this does not have its own firewall.

May I ask why you are still running build 1903?
Is Windows Update not working, or deliberately disabled?
    Thanks.

    Hi, NTN.

I suspect Windows Defender Firewall is not running. When I go to "Firewall & network protection," I get this error message:

"Window Defender Firewall is using settings that may make your device unsafe."

Under that error message, there's a "Restore settings" button, but when I click it, nothing happens.

Windows Storage Service IS running, however.

    Thanks for chiming in.

    Appreciate your help, dalchina.

I've no Defender icon in my tray. I looked in:

    Systems Settings >

    — Select which items appear in the taskbar AND....

    — Turn system icons on or off

.....but an icon for Defender was not among the options.

Ran the trial version of HD Sentinel. All tests passed with flying colors.

Am not able to run chkdsk in an Admin command prompt, however. I tried entering:

    chkdsk s:/scan and
chkdsk s: /scan (with a space between s: and forward-slash, in case I misread your instructions)

In both instances, the error message said:

"Cannot open volume for direct access."

System File Checker found no problems.

I did disable Windows updates. I know, I know.....but I've had rotten luck with Windows updates in the past. Too often, updates seemed to break as many things as they fixed, and I grew weary of being a Windows ambulance. : )

    Thanks again.

    That's the problem. I can't access the settings, so I don't know.

I didn't fully understood your original post, NTN — sorry. You asked if "The Storage Service" was running, and it is.

What I didn't realize was that Windows Defender settings were listed further down the page. Here they are:

NTN, I'm a kindly old man, not a tech wiz. If it takes me a while to respond, I'M TERRIBLY SORRY.
